The Bible reading

Psalm 98

The study explored Psalm 98, identifying salvation as the primary display of God's glory and the central theme of worship. The psalm is structured into three sections: the declaration of God's saving work in verses 1-3, the response of praise in verses 4-8, and the consummation of that work through judgment in verse 9. Participants discussed how salvation reveals God's character, including His love, holiness, and Trinitarian nature, more clearly than any other aspect of His work.

Discussion highlighted the exuberant nature of worship, with members sharing experiences of large-scale praise from Nigeria, the Kingdome, and personal observations of nature. It was noted that while nature reflects God's glory, the re-creative work of salvation is an even greater provocation for praise. The study emphasized that believers should sing with enthusiasm and volume, regardless of vocal skill, as God values the heart of the praise over technical perfection.

The final verse regarding judgment was interpreted as joyful news for believers, representing their vindication and the establishment of justice. The study concluded with a reminder that new truths about God require new songs to express them, encouraging members to expand their hymnody as their understanding of salvation deepens.

Insights

  • The Trinitarian nature of God is most clearly seen in the distinct roles of the Father, Son, and Spirit within salvation.
  • The contrast between the terror of judgment for the wicked and the joy of vindication for the righteous is a key theological point.
  • The 'new song' in verse 1 is necessary because God's marvelous works and the depth of salvation truth are inexhaustible.
  • Nature's response to God varies from trembling in judgment to roaring in praise, illustrating His sovereignty over creation.
  • The enthusiasm of a football crowd is a useful analogy for the level of excitement believers should have for God's salvation.
  • Jeff's ministry, Operation Worship, is the sole provider of Bibles to U.S. military soldiers, a fact highlighted during the update on the new Office of Religious Affairs.

3:55Any last-minute check-ins, please come now.
4:04WV-7VZL.
4:08There he is.
4:09I pulled that fish out of the pond.
4:11Good morning, Roger.
4:12Good to have you with us.
4:13How are you doing?
4:14Any prayer requests?
4:15Go ahead.
4:18Well, let's see.
4:20It's my brother's birthday.
4:22He's kind of crawling out of an unexplained lingering cold.
4:29So, anyway, that's a big day for October, too, for our family.
4:35But, yeah, and then, of course, Autumn's future, as to what the Lord would want to use her to interface with the community, that would be a big deal.
4:50But she made it to the symphony, which was huge.
4:53Anyway, yeah, that's kind of what's on our mind.
4:57Over.
4:59Yeah, copy that.
5:00Okay, we continue to pray for Autumn and her integration with normal social interaction with society.
5:07And I'm glad to hear that your brother's made it through another year.
5:12So, is he your little brother or your big brother?
5:15Seven years younger.
5:18Yeah.
5:18And, yeah, I just, anyway, just hopefully he'll get feeling better for sure.
5:29So, WB7VZL, thanks, Matt.
5:35Yeah, copy that.
5:37So, appreciate that.
5:38And, yeah, you probably raised him since he's seven years younger than you are, being how you're the big brother.
5:44All right, Roger, WB7VZL.
5:46Okay, before we get started with Annette, I want to turn the microphone over to Jeff, AK6OK.
5:51Jeff has an update for us on the Bibles that were rejected by the military base.
5:58Jeff, AK6OK, you've got the floor.
6:01Go ahead.
6:02Yeah, good morning, Max.
6:04Good to hear, everybody.
6:06And I'm talking from the curling remote, so if my signal is different than normal, that's why.
6:13Yeah, big deal here.
6:14So, as you all know, we sent 4,000 Bibles to Great Lakes Naval Air Station about a month ago.
6:23And they were turned around and sent back to us by one of the JAG officers, one of the military attorneys, saying that there were too many Bibles and that we were not welcome to send Bibles for the next year to that base.
6:37And that infuriated me big time.
6:42And with some very small amount of prayer, I contacted my congressman and went all the way to the Pentagon and came back down with the instructions that they are welcome to receive Bibles from us until further notice.
6:57And that there was a little battle going on at the top between the attorneys and the military chief of chaplains.
7:05Well, yesterday, Pete, Pete, which last name is, whatever his last name is, issued a notice to all people in the military that he has started the establishment of the Office of Religious Affairs.
7:25This is a big, big deal.
7:29He has created this position, or this office, to battle this kind of stuff going on.
7:37And Pete Hagseth, I'm sorry, I haven't had my coffee yet.
7:42And I have a copy of that document here.
7:44And it's indicating that all chaplains will be reporting directly to his office for issues such as exactly what happened to us.
7:56Now, I'm not positive whether this was 100% of the reason he created this organization, but it sure is interesting timing.
8:06And the chaplains are thrilled at this, because it actually takes the whole issue of JAG interfering with this stuff a bit away.
8:16JAG is very important.
8:18But it gives the chaplains a direct connection to his office so that there is a lot less problems when you're trying to provide religious materials to chaplains in the U.S.
8:31and all the U.S. military offices.
8:33There you go, Max.
8:34How about that?
8:37All right, Jeff.
8:38Great report.
8:39And I'm glad to hear that there's a favorable attitude at the top towards religious freedom among the troops,
8:45and that this new office has been established to prevent these kind of things in the future.
8:51So, Jeff, that's a huge praise to the Lord.
8:54I'm glad that, you know, you went the direction you did with that.
8:58And what an amazing response that we got.
9:00So, thank the Lord that the Bibles now have free course to arrive at the military bases.
9:06For those of you who don't know, the military does not supply Bibles to soldiers.
9:12They have to buy their own.
9:14And so, Jeff has had a ministry through the decades, Operation Worship,
9:18in which he sent over two and a half million Bibles to our military soldiers on the bases.
9:29Jeff sends them to the chaplains, and the chaplains on the bases then give them freely to the soldiers so the soldiers have Bibles to use.
9:37So, that's been a huge ministry through the years.
9:41And Jeff is the only one sending Bibles to the soldiers.
9:44The American Bible Society used to do it.
9:46The Gideons used to do it.
9:48But they don't do it anymore.
9:50So, Operation Worship, look it up on the Internet.
9:53You can just go to Google, type in Operation Worship, and you'll see what's going on there with Jeff, AK6OK,
9:59and his ministry of sending Bibles to the soldiers.
10:03Jeff, what a great report.
10:05Thank you for that.
10:06All right, we need to get started with our Bible study.
10:09And I'm going to ask Beck, I'll stop by the Inky, if you would please open a prayer for us today.
10:13Go ahead there, Beck.
10:15Sure, let us all come to the Lord in prayer.
10:18Thank you for your goodness and blessings over us and the greatest gift of sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ, dying on the cross for us.
10:27Forgive us when we don't thank you enough for what you've done for us and on a daily basis.
10:31Help keep our eyes set on you and our Bible study today and fill us with your peace, joy, presence, and grace.
10:38And thank you so much for Jeff and what he does with our military sending Bibles.
10:44And Pete, head, sets an operation on our leaders of our countries that do believe in God and support you.
10:51In Jesus Christ's name we pray, amen.
10:56Amen.
10:57Beck, thank you so much for that prayer.
10:58I really appreciate that.
11:00All right, we are in...
11:01Oh, I got a note here, Jeff at K6OK.
11:04Here's a note from Keith, K7NEB.
11:06He says, love that booming Coeur d'Alene signal from Jeff.
11:10Sounds like he's in the same room as me.
11:13So, Jeff, there's a signal report from Keith, K7NEB.
11:16All right, back to our subject matter.
11:18We are in Psalm 98 today, and this psalm talks about the glory of God that is revealed by his saving work and saving us from sin.
11:33And so the centerpiece of the display of the glory of God in this universe is God's mighty work of salvation from sin.
11:42And so there's nothing in the universe that displays the glory of God to the degree that God's work of salvation does.
11:53And so salvation is God's crowning work.
11:57It's the pinnacle of everything that he has done.
12:00It's the greatest manifestation of his glory that's ever been provided.
12:04And so in salvation, we see more of God's character, more of God's power, more of God's wisdom, and more of God's person displayed and set forth than we see it in anything else.
12:19And so in salvation, for example, we learn most clearly about the Trinitarian nature of God when we see the Father electing and the Son redeeming and the Spirit regenerating.
12:31In salvation, we learn most fully about the love of God.
12:35No greater love has a man than this, than that a man lay down his life for his friends.
12:41In salvation, we learn most completely about the holiness of God, that God takes sin seriously, and he only forgives it once the justice with reference to it has been satisfied by the substitutionary work of Jesus.
12:56And so in salvation, God's attributes are more clearly seen and more comprehensively seen than in anything else that he has done.
13:07And so it's for this reason that worship focuses on God's saving work as its central theme.
13:15And so when we gather for worship and when we engage in worship, what is the center of our worship?
13:21Well, it's not just a generic God abstractly considered, but rather it is the God of the Bible and his saving work that we admire and honor and worship.
13:35And so we best know and we best understand and we best see God when we see him at work in providing us with salvation.
13:44And so the more we learn about salvation, the more we learn about God, and the more we learn about salvation, the better we worship God.
13:53And so our psalm today, Psalm 98, is occupied with the saving work of God.
14:01And of course, we should be occupied with it as well.
14:05And if we are, then we'll be a people who are filled with praise and worship and wonder towards such a God who could do such a thing for such a people as we are.
14:16So this psalm starts out with a statement about God's salvation.
14:23And we see that in verse 2.
14:25We see it in verse 3.
14:27And so it's filled with an exuberant and an enthusiastic tone of worship.
14:32The psalmist is electrified with excitement over what God has done in saving him from his sins.
14:41And he's exceedingly fervent in his exhortations to praise the Lord for his saving work.
14:46So the exaltation of God in his saving work is the theme of our psalm today.
14:53Well, with that little introduction, we wanted to read this psalm.
14:57Jared KG6J, if you could read for us Psalm 98, I would sure appreciate that.
15:02Go ahead.
15:03Thank you, Pastor Max.
15:05KG6J, Psalm 98, reading from the New King James.
15:09Oh, sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.
15:17His right hand and his holy arm have gained him the victory.
15:22The Lord has made known his salvation.
15:26His righteousness has openly shown in the sight of the nation.
15:31He has remembered his mercy and his faithfulness to the house of Israel.
15:36All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
15:42Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.
15:46Break forth in song.
15:48Rejoice.
15:49And sing praises.
15:51Sing to the Lord with a harp.
15:54With the harp and the sound of a psalm.
15:58With trumpets.
15:59And the sound of a horn.
16:01Shout joyfully before the Lord, the King.
16:06Lift the sea roar.
16:08And its fullness.
16:10The world and those who dwell in it.
16:13Let the rivers clap their hands.
16:16Let the hills be joyful together before the Lord.
16:20For he is coming to judge the earth.
16:23With righteousness he shall judge the world.
16:26And the people with equity.
16:30Psalm 98.
16:31KG 6J.
16:32Back to you, Pastor Ben.
16:35Yeah, Jerry.
16:36KG 6J.
16:37Wonderful reading.
16:38Thank you for that.
16:39Much appreciated.
16:41All right.
16:41Are there any comments anybody wants to make on Psalm 98?
16:44Please come now with your call sign.
16:49AK6 OK.
16:51Jeff, AK6 OK.
16:52Please go ahead.
16:53You know, all of this joyful noise that it refers to here, it just brings up my imagination to what heaven will be like.
17:03I can't hear very well because I do have hearing aids from all the abuse that I've given my ears over the years.
17:11But it makes me just sit and think about what is it going to sound like in heaven, Max?
17:18Well, you know, Jeff, that's a great observation.
17:21I have been in congregations of 5,000 or 6,000 people at conferences.
17:29And, you know, when you hear everybody singing, it's just like the roar of Niagara Falls.
17:35It's loud.
17:36And it really shakes the building almost.
17:40And yet that's just a tiny taste of what it's going to be like in heaven.
17:45We read in Revelation chapter 7 that before the throne, there is going to be a multitude which no man can number of every kindred, tongue, tribe, and nation.
17:56And imagine a group that size singing praise to God.
18:00It's going to just be overwhelmingly powerful.
18:03And, of course, we have a great God.
18:06He deserves great worship.
18:09And this is the reason why our psalm exhorts us to this level of exuberance and zeal and enthusiasm and loudness of voice.
18:20Because a great God deserves great praise.
18:24And we need to give it everything we've got when it comes to offering him praise.
18:29Let's not be quiet or backward.
18:31Let's sing out and give God the glory that he deserves with enthusiasm.
18:37So, yeah, Jeff, I can't imagine what it's going to be like in heaven, but it's just going to be wonderful.
18:42All right.
18:43Great comment, Jeff.
18:44Other comments.
18:45Please come down.
18:46KD7, ZXN.
18:49Kevin, KD7, ZXN.
18:51Please go ahead.
18:53Well, very good.
18:54Well, you know, I was going to touch on a couple of the verses here and the theme of this, but one of the things, but I wanted to touch on this because it's interesting.
19:07My wife is kind of starting doing a little YouTube channel and actually TikTok, and I've put some of them up on YouTube.
19:15But one of the things she talked about that's interesting is the difference between praise and worship songs from Nigeria and America.
19:27And the Spirit of God is in both, clearly.
19:33But one of the points that she makes is that they are louder there, that she's used to louder singing and praising.
19:44And I'll tell you, they have some of the most wonderful musicians.
19:49Of course, they use a lot of horns and a lot of other instruments, instrumentation in their worship.
19:57And, but there's this one saxophone player I've heard that makes Kenny G sound like an amateur.
20:06He is just amazing.
20:08But it's all for the glory of God.
20:10But in the, once a year there, where she lived, she came from a city of 21 million people, which is hard to imagine.
20:21But their camp, once a year, they'd have to get camp together, they call it.
20:27It's a huge, huge campus.
20:29There would be a million people there praising and singing hymns to God.
20:35And some of them are traditional hymns that we all are familiar with.
20:41Some are other hymns.
20:45But the enthusiasm and the string, you know, just the hearing all of them singing together, like you pointed out, Max.
20:55And you ask Jeff, you know, what will that sound like in glory when we have just nations upon nations upon nations of people singing praises under our Lord?
21:09But this is a great, this does capture that kind of celebration.
21:13God is the God of salvation.
21:15And, you know, they're witness to this, as they point out here, you know, to the salvation of God, whether it's from the famine and coming into Egypt with Joseph there, the exodus out of Egypt, the leading of God in the spirit through the, you know, the wilderness.
21:36The, you know, and later, the exodus out of captivity, Babylon and restored into Jerusalem.
21:46You know, all this, again, salvation from God.
21:52And, of course, the looking forward of the great salvation that's ahead.
21:56KB 7 is that example.
22:00Yeah, Kevin, well said.
22:01I can't imagine a million people singing in one place.
22:04That must have just been awe-inspiring.
22:07And, yes, you know, I've seen video.
22:08I haven't been to Africa, but I've seen video of the worship that goes on there.
22:12And you're right.
22:13It's exuberant.
22:14It's enthusiastic.
22:16It's loud in the best sense of that word because people are enthusiastic for God.
22:24You know, if you've ever gone to a football game in a giant stadium and, you know, when a touchdown occurs, everybody jumps to their feet and they yell and carry on.
22:35And how much more should we be excited and sing loudly and offer praise to God for what he has done in bringing us into salvation and ultimately into heaven?
22:50So we have far more reason to be enthusiastic than a football crowd does, and we should at least match their enthusiasm as we bring worship to God.
23:01Great comment, Kevin.
23:02Thank you for that, and thanks for telling us about what's going on there in Nigeria.
23:07All right, so now we'd like to acknowledge Carol, KK7TPO.
23:11Carol, see you there on the Utah SDR.
23:14And also Dave, KE7WKI.
23:17Thank you both for being there this morning.
23:19All right, any other comments on Psalm 98?
23:22Please come out at your call sign.
23:24KJ7PVT.
23:27Mark, KJ7PVT, you're coming through really well.
23:30Go ahead.
23:30Yes, this reminds me of something that happened many years ago.
23:36I don't know if any of you remember the Kingdome, but there was a Promise Keepers event held in the Kingdome.
23:45And so that place was packed clear to the rafters with men.
23:51And there were many times where that whole place lit up with worship of the Lord.
24:02And I had brought a friend of mine who I was introducing to the Lord, and I took him to that event.
24:10And he was standing next to me when Will stood up, and he really didn't have much of an idea of what was going on.
24:17And we sang, How Great Thou Art.
24:22You can't believe what a Kingdome filled.
24:28This is a place where all the football was played, and monster trucks were there.
24:35I mean, this place would just echo, and the acoustics were amazing.
24:43But the point that I'm trying to make was, we had men from the, covered the entire floor, all the way up to the ceilings.
24:52And we were singing, How Great Thou Art.
24:55And I remember us looking, he looked at me like he had never heard anything like this before in his life.
25:03And he asked me, Do you guys do this all the time?
25:05And the answer is yes, privately, in church, whenever we can.
25:14Back to you, Max.
25:17Yeah, Mark, thanks for sharing that story about the Kingdome and about the Promise Keepers
25:23and all those men singing, How Great Thou Art.
25:27Yeah, that must have been a very, very moving experience.
25:30And, you know, we need to sing loudly in church.
25:33The other day I was driving my pickup, and I was singing to the Lord just by myself in my pickup, you know.
25:40And you can sing as loud as you want, and you don't have to worry about anybody looking at you sideways
25:46because you didn't hit a note just right or whatever.
25:48So we sing loudly in private.
25:51We sing loudly in public.
25:53And, you know, that's the emphasis of our song.
25:55You know, when you look at verse 4, make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth.
26:00Make a loud noise and rejoice and sing praise.
26:06And so verse 6, with trumpets and the sound of a cornet, make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King.
26:13And so you see the exuberance.
26:15You see the volume.
26:19You see the intensity, the focus, the zeal of this praise.
26:23And why does all of this come to pass?
26:26Why are we praising the Lord?
26:27Verse 2, the Lord has made known his salvation.
26:32His righteousness has he openly showed in the sight of the people.
26:38And so, you know, when we think about God saving us from hell, about saving us from our sins,
26:45about saving us out of this present evil world and saving us into being who we were originally created to be,
26:54which is those who manifest and walk in the character of God and in the worship and praise of God without any sin clinging to us.
27:03And when we think about how righteous God is, God's never going to sin.
27:07He's never going to lie.
27:08He's never going to do us evil or bad.
27:11Man, there is wonderful cause for praise in what he's done for us in saving us
27:16and for who he is in the righteousness that he manifests in his character.
27:22So, yeah, lots of ground and room for praise.
27:25Mark, thanks for sharing that.
27:26That must have been awe-inspiring.
27:29All right, any other comments on our psalm?
27:31Please come down.
27:32Okay, we had a double there.
27:44First we'll go with Roger and then Jeff.
27:46Roger, WP7DZL.
27:47Go ahead.
27:48Yeah, I was just reading about some of the thoughts about the order of this psalm.
27:56And here's the division that they kind of decided here.
28:03The first three verses is the manner of praising.
28:09And then, let's see, the middle section is the, I guess that's the manner of praising.
28:19The reason for praising is, as the first three verses, the manner of praising in the center section
28:26and the invitation to praise.
28:30So, that's kind of how it looked here to this interpreter.
28:36And I think that that's a pretty reasonable division as I see it here.
28:43Over.
28:44Yeah, Roger, thank you for pointing out the division of the psalm.
28:48I think in verses 1 to 3, we have the declaration of God's saving work.
28:53Twice it says in verse 2 and verse 3 that we've seen the salvation of God.
28:59So, the declaration of God's saving work in verses 1 to 3.
29:03And then, the response to God's saving work in verses 4 to 8.
29:07What's the response?
29:08Well, it's to make a joyful noise.
29:11It's to sing.
29:12It's to use instruments.
29:14It even calls upon the natural creation in verse 7.
29:17Let the sea roar in the fullness thereof the world, and they that dwell therein.
29:23So, that's the response to God's saving work.
29:25And then, the consummation of God's saving work, verse 9.
29:28And that is, He's coming to judge the earth.
29:31And in that day of judgment, those who are saved will be brought into heaven.
29:35And those who refuse that salvation will be cast into hell.
29:40So, the declaration of God's saving work, 1 to 3.
29:43The response to God's saving work, 4 to 8.
29:48And then, the consummation of God's saving work in verse 9.
29:52So, yeah, you know, as we look at these psalms and we recognize the natural divisions that are in them,
30:00it helps us to understand the flow of thought and to process what we're being taught there a little more easily.
30:06Roger, thank you for that.
30:08All right, let's go over to Jeff.
30:10Jeff, 8K-6, okay.
30:11Jeff, you had a comment.
30:12Go ahead.
30:13Yeah, I sure do.
30:14First of all, Beck, thanks for the email.
30:17And, Max, I just say you had back the declaration from the Department of War.
30:23So, you'll want to read that.
30:24It's on your email.
30:27In 4 to 6, it notes how the song invites the whole earth to break into joyful shouts.
30:34It encourages loud, expressive worship accompanied by instruments like trumpets, harps, and horns.
30:41But here's the one that caught my eye.
30:43Verse 9.
30:45The psalm concludes by looking forward to God coming to judge the earth.
30:54But listen to this one.
30:55Far from being frightening, this judgment is portrayed as joyful news
31:00because God rules with absolute righteousness, fairness, and equality for the oppressed.
31:09So, this is not for us believers.
31:13This is not a piece of bad news.
31:16This is incredibly good news over.
31:20Yeah, you know, it's important for us to understand the two-fold nature of the final judgment.
31:25For Christians, the final judgment is something we look forward to because it will be our vindication.
31:33It will be a declaration of our justification through the saving work of Jesus.
31:40On the other hand, for the wicked, the day of judgment will be a day of terror and a day of condemnation and a day of wrath.
31:47So, the judge of all the earth is going to do right on the day of judgment.
31:52He's going to settle all the accounts, and he's going to make sure that every wicked deed is going to be punished
31:59and every righteous deed is going to be rewarded.
32:03Those who have trusted in Jesus as their Lord and Savior are going to be vindicated and brought into heaven.
32:11Those who have rejected Jesus as their Lord and Savior are going to be condemned, and they're going to be cast into hell.
32:17And so, that's when salvation is going to be fully seen and fully experienced.
32:23That's when we're going to be completely delivered from all the effects of sin,
32:28and that's when we're going to see the establishment of justice.
32:32So, you know, for us, the day of judgment is a wonderful thing, and for others, it is a terrifying thing.
32:41Jeff, thanks for pointing that out.
32:42For us, as Romans 8 says, there's no condemnation to those who are in Christ.
32:47And, you know, when you look at Matthew 25, and you look at the judgment of the sheep and the goats, right?
32:52You know, when it talks about the sheep, it talks about just the things they did that manifested their faith.
32:59And when it talks about the goats, it talks about the things they did that indicated that they had no faith.
33:04And so, the judgment is going to be according to works, but the works are going to be seen as the evidence of either the presence of saving faith or the lack of it.
33:15So, yeah, you know, this note of judgment at the end of this psalm is a note of praise and joy and exuberance for the believers,
33:24because that's where their vindication is going to take place.
33:28It says in Revelation chapter 20, in verse 4, that judgment was given to them, that is, given in favor of them.
33:36And so, there's going to be that well done, thou good and faithful servant.
33:40Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord, and that's what we're looking forward to on that day.
33:46Jeff, great comment.
33:47Thank you for that.
33:48All right, any other comments on our passage?
33:50Please come down.
33:50Thank you.
33:58KG-6J.
34:01Jerry, KG-6J, please go ahead.
34:04Yeah, this has already been said or strongly implied, but I'd like to nail it down and then listen, of course, if you would agree.
34:14There's absolutely nothing that I've ever seen in the Word that judges our voice.
34:20Now, for those that play instruments, they're encouraged to play them skillfully, but our voice.
34:25So, there's absolutely nothing about that.
34:28Make a joyful noise.
34:30Now, when we're in church and we're singing, your brothers and sisters around you might be judging your voice, but the Lord doesn't.
34:37He just hears that praise.
34:40And so, I just wanted to make that distinction.
34:45And back to you, Pastor Bax, KG-6J.
34:49Yeah, amen, Jerry.
34:50You know, the thing is, is that, you know, some of us have really good voices and we can stay on tune and, you know, people like to hear us singing.
35:01And there's others of us that can't hardly carry a tune in a bucket.
35:05And we just really struggle with being tone deaf.
35:09But that doesn't exempt us from singing and singing out.
35:14Now, I think we all need to work at improving our voices, just like we work at improving our skill on musical instruments, those of us who play.
35:24You know, you don't want to have somebody get up there and just climb a bunch of dinner plates together and call that worship.
35:31You know, we need to play skillfully on our instruments.
35:34And I think we need to work at being skillful in our singing.
35:37But the singing is never said to be inappropriate if it's something less than skillful.
35:44And so, I've had people in my church who have said, oh, you know, I don't sing because I can't carry a tune.
35:50Well, as you well said, it says make a joyful noise.
35:55And so, you need to lift up your voice in praise as well.
35:58Well, you know, and if you're having trouble with the tune, you know, go ahead and sing out anyway and listen for others and work at learning how to tune your voice up.
36:09But it doesn't mean that you don't sing praise until your voice is perfect.
36:15So, Jerry, thanks for pointing that out.
36:17Everybody needs to sing.
36:19Everybody needs to sing loudly.
36:21And if your voice isn't the greatest, just go ahead and offer to God what you have, and God will be pleased with that.
36:28Thank you, Jerry.
36:29All right.
36:29Any other comments?
36:30Please come now.
36:35AK6OK.
36:38AK6OK.
36:39Jeff, go ahead.
36:40Yeah, Max, I just uploaded the memorandum from Pete Heggs to our website right on the front.
36:47If you go to OperationWorship.com and look at her documents, you will see a copy of that.
36:53AK6OK.
36:54And I've got to go get my sweetheart up.
36:56She's got to go to physical therapy this morning.
37:00All right, Jeff.
37:01Got you checked out.
37:02Thank you for that.
37:03And, yeah, Operation Worship, the section of documents, and I'll have that declaration from Pete Heggs to our website.
37:09On establishing that Office of Religious Freedom and Affairs for the military.
37:15All right.
37:15But I have a comment I want to make here about verse 1.
37:20It says,
37:20Sing unto the Lord a new song.
37:23Why?
37:24For he has done marvelous things.
37:27His right hand and his holy arm has gotten him the victory.
37:32And, you know, this whole business of singing a new song,
37:36the reason for needing to compose a new song is because God has done marvelous things.
37:42The text specifically says that his right hand and his holy arm have gotten him the victory.
37:52And so as we learn more things about the marvelous work that God has done,
37:57and as we learn new things about the marvelous work that the Lord has done,
38:03it calls for new songs of praise and more songs of praise in order to convey the new truths about God that we have come to understand.
38:12And that is why, as we grow in our knowledge of God, we also have to grow in the number of songs that we sing about God.
38:21New truth requires new music and new songs to convey it.
38:26And an expanding knowledge requires an expanding hymnody in order to express it.
38:32And that's why there's no end to the making of songs, because there's no end to the new vistas of understanding there is about God.
38:42So the more you learn, the more you need additional hymns to express it.
38:46Now, our own Beck, Alpha Alpha Phi Yankee, just wrote a new song.
38:50Why?
38:50Because he has a new and better understanding of the saving work of God in his life.
38:55And so many people have been moved through the centuries to write a new song as they come to a new understanding of the truth of God.
39:05And as you come to a new understanding, if you're not a musician,
39:08then there's plenty of songs out there that you can find that will express that new understanding that you have.
39:16So we are told in verse 1 specifically to sing a new song, because God's right hand and holy arm has gotten him the victory.
39:28So whatever this victory was he's talking about here, and it appears to be salvation, because that's mentioned in verse 2.
39:35It's mentioned in verse 3.
39:37That's what the song is about.
39:39So be learning new songs.
39:41If you're a songwriter, be writing new songs in order to express the truth of God's word, the truth of God's character, the truth of God's work that he has done.
39:52All right.
39:53Any further comments?
39:54Please come down.
39:55KB7, KTY.
39:58KB7, KTY.
40:00Go ahead.
40:00I thought it was interesting that in Psalm 97, it says,
40:05A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.
40:10And then it talks about his lightnings enlighten the world, ears saw and tremble, nails melted like wax.
40:18So when God is pouring out his judgments, he uses the natural creation.
40:25And then it seems like time after time there's other verses that talk about the creation expressing praise to God.
40:38And so today then we have the sea roaring, and the world, they that dwell therein, the floods clap their hands, let the hills be joyful together.
40:51So that's the opposite response of the natural creation in actually praising God.
40:58Back to you.
41:02Yeah, thank you for that, Kathy.
41:03You know, the Bible says in Psalm 19,
41:06The heavens declare the glory of God, the firmament shows his handiwork.
41:09Day into day utter speech, night into night shows knowledge.
41:13There is no voice or language where their speech is not heard, right?
41:16So the natural creation absolutely is an instrument of God, both of judgment and also of worship.
41:24And so you're right, in the natural disasters that we see there in Psalm 96 and 97, in verses 3 and 4 and 5,
41:36those are God's judgments.
41:38And then in verses 7 and 8, it talks about the natural creation, giving praise to God.
41:47You know, it reminded me of that verse in Revelation chapter 5, in verse 13.
41:55Revelation 5, 13 says,
41:57So the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made.
42:22So since God made the creation, God controls the creation, the creation reveals a great deal about God,
42:29both as to his wrath and the natural disasters, and of his grace and mercy in all the blessings of the fruitful field,
42:38in all the way in which everything still works together to meet the needs of man in such a marvelous fashion,
42:45and that brings glory to God.
42:47So thanks for pointing out, Kathy, that contrast between how nature is used for judgment,
42:54how nature is used for blessing, how nature is used to pronounce the wrath of God,
43:00and how nature is used to bring praise to God.
43:03All right, any other comments?
43:05Please come down.
43:12Mark, KJ7PVT, go ahead.
43:17Mark, KJ7PVT, go ahead.
43:37And across the street from that, there's this beautiful tree, and it has a lead back, and there's a point in the lead for the wind, and it's starting to come up a little bit, and that tree moves, it looks like it's got a hand raised high, and it looks like it swings left to right, left to right, and I walk out there every night just to see that.
44:07That tree is praising the Lord, and I look out the lead for the birds that are at the theater, and you can pay attention to what God made, the feathers, and how they're going to live, and they're all in their own tiny legs, you know, and flowers, you know, anywhere in the sense of studying sun,
44:37all of the things that God has forced us to show us with joy, and it's not just that, but it's doing the things, it's the creation itself.
44:48Thank you, man.
44:49Yeah, Mark, great comments.
44:53Thank you for that.
44:54For those of you who couldn't hear, Mark was talking about our psalm in verse 7 and 8.
45:03He's talking about going out on his porch and seeing the tree across the street with its uplifted branches, and as the breeze blows through it and the leaves move and the branches move, it's like the tree is raising its arms in praise to God.
45:28And, you know, he sees that tree, as it were, lifting up its arms and moving its leaves in praise to heaven, and it just causes him to worship.
45:38And then he talked about the birds and the bird feeder and how he looks at the feathers and see how intricately they are made and how that moves him to worship.
45:47And then the flowers that are in the garden there and how that, as you look at a flower and you see the transcendent beauty of that flower and the colors and the design that are represented there, how that moves him to worship God.
46:04And, you know, it is absolutely true that nature is a huge provocation to worship because in it we see the handiwork of God, we see the wisdom of God, we see the goodness of God.
46:17But above nature is the salvation that has been provided for sinners in and through the saving substitutionary work of Jesus Christ in making us into a new creation, in causing us to be born again, in giving us a spiritual resurrection.
46:39And so the re-creative work of salvation is an even greater provocation to praise than nature.
46:49Nature is huge, and Mark did a great job of pointing that out.
46:53How much more salvation should move us to praise?
46:58And so that's what our psalm is expressing to us, that, yes, nature brings glory to God, but salvation brings even greater glory to God as we see his work in that realm, which is greater than his work in the realm of creation.
47:18Mark, thanks for sharing that experience of your own worship of the tree and the birds and the flowers.
47:25All right, we are out of time.
47:28We need to stop here today on that node of praise, and we need to go to prayer.
47:34Are there any final prayer requests before Al leads us in prayer?
47:37Please come now with your close mind.
47:46All right, Al, KJ7QQH, go ahead and close in prayer for us, please.

60:17Becca, my youngest daughter, has a membership at a theater for discount tickets, and we went and saw that new movie that Brad sent in, Heart of the Beat.

60:34It's hardening language.
60:37There are some, you know, it's Mount Wilberhood survival, so there are some medical things going on.
60:44But I will tell you that that is a very powerful movie.
60:47I won't spoil it for anybody, but I highly recommend that if you are a dog person, well, maybe even if you're not, that you go see it.
60:57It's very, very good.

62:50I have quite a few on there as you can call them, but I appreciate you keeping up with them.
62:55Well, thank you for your appreciation, but it's all the Lord's working for the Lord, and we
63:05lift everybody up the best way we can, and thank you for your contributions, and sometimes
63:16I actually get it right if I can hear if it's wrong with me.
63:21No, I understand.
63:22No, the work is the Lord.
63:23Yeah, that's the right emphasis, but somebody still has to manage that list, and I know
63:31there's several of you that do that, and it doesn't go with us, and those guys are doing
63:38a great job.
63:43Thanks again.
