The Bible reading

Psalm 105

The study focused on Psalm 105, identifying it as part of the thanksgiving psalms (103-107) that praise God for His works. The psalm recounts Israel's history from the Abrahamic covenant to the entrance into the Promised Land, highlighting God's faithfulness in fulfilling promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It details specific providential acts, including the elevation of Joseph, the plagues in Egypt, and the Exodus led by Moses.

Insights

  • God's covenants are 'bankable' promises; because God is eternal, His unconditional covenants remain in force and are always fulfilled.
  • Remembering God's past acts of redemption is essential for maintaining faith and gratitude, similar to how the Passover reenacted the Exodus for each generation.
  • Obedience to God's laws is not a restriction but a source of freedom, acting as a protective fence against the destructive consequences of sin.
  • Personal testimonies of God's protection in hostile environments, such as workplace conflicts, mirror the biblical narrative of God caring for Israel in Egypt.
  • Christian fellowship should involve sharing God's wondrous works from Scripture and personal experience to draw others to praise and trust in Him.

9:48jesus name amen amen jim thank you so much for that prayer i really appreciate that all right before we
9:55read psalm 105 i want to give a little introduction to that we're in this section of the psalms called the
10:00thanksgiving psalms uh 103 to 107 in which the psalmist gives god thanks and praise for his wonderful
10:09works toward us in psalm 103 we saw thanksgiving offered for god's mercy and grace in psalm 104 we
10:17saw thanksgiving offered for god's creation we looked at that yesterday and now today in psalm 105 we see
10:25thanksgiving for god's covenant faithfulness and providential care in his dealings with his people
10:32god's made covenants with his people and he sees to it that the terms of those covenants are fulfilled
10:39in the outworkings of his providence and so what this psalm does is it recounts israel's early history
10:47and god's gracious and faithful dealings with her as time unfolded and so the mighty acts of god for his
10:57people from the very start of israel's existence is chronicled in this psalm all the way up to her
11:05entrance into the promised land and as we see the lord's wonderful works in israel's early history
11:12we're moved to praise and thanks for the marvelous works that he did on behalf of his people
11:19now the marvelous work of god for which this praise is given is the promise and the fulfillment
11:27of the abrahamic covenant and we see early in this psalm that god chose abraham and his descendants
11:35to be his elect and special people and god made a covenant with him known as the abrahamic covenant
11:42we read about that in genesis chapter 12 and genesis chapter 15 and genesis chapter 17 and genesis chapter 22
11:52and in that covenant among other things god promised abraham and his descendants the land of israel
12:00well this psalm records how god was faithful to that promise and all god did in fulfilling
12:07it over many centuries of time and so the time between god promising abraham the land and joshua and the
12:16children of israel entering in and taking over that land was a little over 400 years um so uh even though uh
12:27it may be centuries in in the making god always fulfills his promises nothing can resist his will or his
12:36power or his plans to do what he promised so we see him working here through various uh periods of time
12:44through various individuals in order to bring to pass what he promised to abraham in the abrahamic
12:51covenant and in particular the land that was given to them so this psalm traces israel's history from
12:58abraham up to the entrance into the promised land there in verse 44 uh all right uh steve w6ysi is going
13:08to read psalm 105 for us uh steve go ahead there okay let's uh into psalm 105
13:17i'll be reading from the new american standard morning
13:26we'll give thanks to the lord all upon his name
13:31think known his deeds among the peoples sing to him sing praises to him speak of all his wonders
13:40glory in his holy name let the heart of those who seek the lord be glad seek the lord in his strength
13:51seek his face continually remember his wonders which he has done his marvels and the judgments uttered by
14:01his mouth oh seed of abraham his servant oh sons of jacob his chosen ones he is the lord our god
14:11his judgments are in all the earth verse 8 he has remembered his covenant forever
14:19word which he commanded to a thousand generations covenant which he made with abraham and his oath to
14:27isaac and he confirmed it in makeup for a statute to israel as an everlasting covenant saying to you
14:40i will give the land of canaan as a portion of your inheritance
14:47they were only a number but when they were only a few men in number very few strangers in it
14:57and they wandered about from nation to nation from one kingdom to another people he permitted no man to
15:06oppress them and he reproved kings for their sakes not touch my anointed ones do my prophets no harm
15:18and he called for a famine upon the land broke the whole staff of bread he sent a man before them joseph
15:31joseph who was sold as a slave they afflicted his feet with fetters he himself was laid in irons
15:41till the time his word came to pass the word of the lord tested him
15:47king sent and released him the ruler of people set him free made him lord of his house and ruler
15:57over all his possessions to imprison his princes at will that he might teach his elders wisdom
16:05israel israel also came into egypt thus jacob sojourned in the land of ham
16:13caused his people to be very fruitful made them stronger than their adversaries verse 25
16:21he turned their hearts to hate his people
16:28to deal craftively with his servants
16:32he sent moses his servant and aaron whom he had chosen they performed his wondrous acts among them and
16:40miracles in the land of ham he said darkness made it dark they did not rebel against his words
16:49he turned their waters into blood and caused their fish to die the land swarmed with frogs
16:58even the chambers of their king he spoke and there came a swarm of flies and gnats
17:06all their territory gave them hail for rain claiming fire in their land struck down their vines also and
17:16their fig trees and their fig trees and shattered the trees of their territory he spoke locusts came
17:23and young locusts even without number and ate up all vegetation in their land they ate up the fruit of
17:34their ground he also struck down all the firstborn in their land first fruits from all their vigor
17:4437. and he brought them out with silver and gold
17:53and among his tribes there was not one who stumbled he just was glad when they departed for the dread of
18:01them had fallen upon them he spread a cloud for a covering and fire to illumine by night
18:0837. they asked and he brought quail satisfied them with the bread of heaven he opened the rock and water
18:17flowed out it ran in the dry places like a river for he remembered his holy word with abraham his servant
18:27and he brought forth his people with joy the chosen ones with a joyful shout
18:33he gave them also the lands of the nations that they might take possession of the fruit of the people
18:40of labor but that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws praise the lord before psalm 105
18:51steve w6ysi thank you for that rating great job appreciate that a lot all right any comments on this psalm
19:00uh before we do comments uh the net would like to acknowledge john kf0 tkd from fort columns colorado
19:07john thank you for being with us appreciate you being there uh see your check in there on net logger
19:12all right that's john kf0 tkd fort columns colorado any other uh check-ins please come now
19:20uh kilo seven sierra golf sierra been a while sorry uh sierra golf sierra there's no worries about that
19:27glad to have you with us appreciate you being there all right uh that would be uh stacy from corvallis
19:33k7sgs stacy good to have you with us it has been a bit kj7 pwm there's brian kj7 pwm brian we got you
19:47all right uh those are our late check-ins all right any comments on psalm 105 please come now
19:52wb7bzl roger please go ahead well i it's it's a no-brainer this is a marvelous train uh a chain and
20:12a train of thinking regarding how israel was blessed even when they were oppressed for those 400 years in
20:21egypt and how the deliverance the great deliverance of passover uh progressed and of course took joseph
20:32from prison and elevated him as a ruler and all those wonderful genesis stories north yeah amen and uh
20:42this is quite the history here um you know it's a wonderful summary of of uh centuries of god's
20:48stealings and you know i was i was really interested to observe the bookends uh that
20:53are in this psalm and uh you notice um it says in verse 8 uh this psalm he remembered his covenant
21:01forever the word which uh he commanded to a thousand generations which covenant he made with abraham
21:08okay and it goes on and talks about isaac and jacob as well but it starts out here with the abrahamic
21:14covenant in verse 8 and 9 and then if you look at the end of the chapter uh in verse 42 verse 42 it says
21:25for he remembered his holy promise and abraham his servant and so basically what this psalm is is it's a
21:34declaration of how god made the abrahamic covenant and then how god fulfilled the abrahamic covenant
21:41and and i guess the point i'm trying to make here is that when god makes promises he always keeps them
21:46he always fulfills them and of course because this was uh the promise of a covenant uh these are things
21:53that he fulfills over the centuries over time uh and just like with the new covenant he's been fulfilling
21:59that now for two thousand years and saving a vast number of people over the whole world um so uh
22:07you know these are things we can uh as it were uh to use the figure of speech take to the bank
22:13uh they're always good um so praise the lord for these wonderful covenants that god has made and how
22:20he keeps them you know we've got the noah covenant the abrahamic covenant um of course the old covenant
22:27that came and went because that was a conditional one uh and then we have the davidic covenant uh and
22:33then of course the new covenant and uh these uh four covenants out of the five were unconditional
22:38covenants uh they're still in force they're still operational god's still keeping them and will
22:44continue to keep them of course the old covenant was replaced with a new um but um in any event these
22:51covenants are the skeleton of the bible upon which all a redemptive revelation hangs and so it's
22:59important for us to understand them and that's what the psalmist is doing for us here he's saying hey
23:04god made promises god kept promises here's how he did that through the centuries uh roger great
23:11comment thank you all right uh any other comments please come down
23:19what would you be seven visa l roger please go ahead i don't want to hog the time here for
23:33by any i mean there's so much here but uh i'm i'm thinking about how the remembering aspect was reinforced
23:46every year at passover time for these tracings of events so i could i could imagine that the children
23:56who were supposed to go through the passover as if they were there it was present tense and so they
24:07relive that reenacted that and so in other words instead of just watching a movie they put themselves
24:16as actors in the passover movie every generation was supposed to do that and it was every year
24:24so that their memory wouldn't get soft over amen uh you know it's so important to remember the works of
24:30god and uh you're right all those feast days and fast days those are all designed to bring to
24:36remembrance um god's uh promises to them his past dealings with them and uh their responsibilities
24:44to him and we have that wonderful ceremony of remembrance as well the lord's supper uh in which we
24:52um you know reflect on past history uh what did jesus do for us in the past he died for us
24:59on future history you know we we celebrate the lord's supper till he comes and so we're looking
25:04forward to the promises and of course then our present a trust and reliance on jesus as our lord
25:12and savior from our sins and so remembering is something that's really really important and uh you
25:19know thank the lord for these ceremonial remembrances that enable the people of god under their various
25:25uh covenantal administrations to reflect on the covenant they're under the promises that are made
25:32the privileges they have as a result the hope that is before them and of course their responsibilities
25:39and relationship to it so yeah the passover was a remembrance of redemption uh from uh egypt uh physical
25:48salvation out of egypt and then of course the lord's supper is a remember of spiritual salvation from
25:54that spiritual egypt of bondage to satan we were in and how we were brought out of the kingdom of
26:00darkness and into the kingdom of light so yeah that's an important pivot point in the history of israel
26:09and of course in our history our personal life history as well all right any other comments please come
26:31uh max um yeah for sure um verse 44 and gave them the lands of the heathen and they inherited the
26:41labor of the people that they might observe his statutes and keep his laws praise you the lord
26:48so here you have god keeping his promise verse 44 what did god say to abraham well he promised him
26:54three things he promised him the land and the seed and the blessing and so here the focus in particular
27:02is on the land and how he kept that promise verse 44 and then of course what is their responsibility
27:10verse 45 to observe his statutes and keep his laws and so jesus too said jesus who is our moses our
27:18emancipator he says if you love me keep my commandments and then the great commission
27:23uh baptizing them uh baptizing them you know make disciples baptize them and teach them to observe
27:28all things whatever i've commanded you and so there are covenant obligations that are upon those who are
27:36in a covenant relationship with god through faith in jesus and so for us too we're to observe the
27:43statutes and the laws that jesus has given to us and carry those out in our lives so and you know the
27:50nature of our relationship with god is that it's reciprocal he does wonderful things for us and
27:57then it's our reasonable service to present our bodies a living sacrifice to him and uh so that's uh
28:05how we respond to the wonderful things that he has done on our behalf is we keep those commandments
28:13not to earn his favor uh but to demonstrate uh thankfulness for the favor that he has shown to
28:20us by his grace and through his son jesus christ uh roger thanks for that all right other comments on the
28:27the psalm come now
28:38wb seven roger go ahead it helps me to see a couple of things i'll just throw out some phrases if anybody
28:49wants to comment i think of the ten commandments are the codification of love it's a codification of
29:02love and then i also think of these statutes god's finger wrote freedom god's finger wrote freedom too that
29:16helps me as i look at these these commands you know and and it it's it's it's a it's a marvelous
29:24depiction of love in contrast to the other nations around and so that anyway it just preserves a
29:34relationship over amen and i really like those two things when you tie the ten commandments to love
29:42and freedom uh then what that does is it transforms them in your thinking from being those things that
29:50restrict us from doing you know enjoyable stuff to things that protect us from doing destructive things
29:59you know the reason we build a fence at the edge of a cliff is to to create um you know a barrier
30:08between a person and dreadful injury right it's for protection and so when god says things like don't
30:15steal and don't kill and don't lie um you know don't use the name of the lord in vain what are those
30:22things those are fences that keep us from doing things that destroy ourselves and so uh freedom is not
30:31having no fences freedom is being able to operate within this huge fenced-in area that god has given us
30:40outside of which is nothing but destruction and so when you look at people who keep the ten commandments
30:47um they have freedom from a lot of really bad consequences and they have the enjoyment of a lot of
30:55really wonderful privileges uh you know when you look at the nature of the family a father and a mother
31:01and children who are all treating each other with respect is that a blessing or what you know and we look
31:08at the prohibition against adultery has adultery ever produced any happiness uh it has not okay and it's the
31:17same way with all the other commandments when we uh remember the lord our god and uh he's the only god
31:23we worship when we respect and reverence uh his name uh when we uh have a relationship with him
31:30under the terms that he has prescribed um man our lives are filled with blessing and freedom from uh
31:38the the bondage of worshiping a false god or pursuing a rebellion against the true god so yeah you know
31:47certainly the the commandments are commandments of freedom and then of love as well uh because
31:53you know god says i've loved you with everlasting love there was therefore loving kindness have i drawn
31:59you well how did god draw us to himself and what was keeping us apart from god well it was sin right
32:05and so sin kept us apart god removed the barrier of sin uh and therefore was able to draw near to us
32:12and so that's the reason why it says in romans chapter 13 uh in verse 10 love worketh no ill to
32:18his neighbor therefore love is the fulfilling of the law and so the good news is is the way i love you
32:26is by keeping the ten commandments towards you i don't steal your stuff i don't lie to you i don't
32:32commit adultery with your wife certainly don't try to kill you um and so in fact i do the opposite of
32:39those things right uh i i work hard at telling you the truth and being transparent i work hard at
32:45and seeing to it that your material prosperity is protected and advanced um you know i work hard
32:52at strengthening your marriage and your family um and so when we practice the opposite positive
32:59virtues of the prohibitions in the ten commandments um man that that brings people closer together
33:06so yeah love and freedom i love that roger those are two great terms that describe the effect and the
33:13outcome of keeping god's law and why he gave it it wasn't to oppress us um you know it says in first
33:20john that the commandments of the lord are not grievous um and the only grief we have is that we don't
33:26keep them better and when we fail to keep them that's what gives us grief roger great comment freedom
33:33and love all right any other comments please come now
33:42uh go ahead there scott would you mind if i recounted a personal story that that tells about god's
33:49faithfulness i'll keep it for any brief yeah please do go ahead so years ago i um taught at uh at a particular
34:00school uh and uh the program that i was in was an electronic program that was um enrollment that
34:07dropped and um i thought okay i'm gonna have to get a job because with no students here i'm not gonna be
34:14able to teach anyone another group uh telecommunication for exchange means that we want you to be part of
34:21our group and i thought okay great and uh so i joined their group and uh they said we need to teach uh
34:29our communications and nobody in our group knows anything about cellulars and i said yeah and i've
34:37worked with them for oh probably six months to a year um but uh right off the bat um they pulled me they
34:47all have their offices in one room and they pulled me in and they said well now that you're part of our
34:52group you will bring your office down here you will take the breaks with us you will um you know we go
35:01everywhere together and he said to them i said look i certainly understand the importance of a team but
35:08i'm not going to do that i'm perfectly good well they turned on me and uh they reported me to the dean
35:16and uh i was put on an improvement plan which i have with no problem the dean knew that something
35:26was going on and then later the enrollment completely dropped in that program uh and my job went with it
35:35and that whole program went uh away fast forward you know another uh probably uh well let's see it was
35:45another yeah about another year i got a job where i'm at now and um my boss came and she brought me
35:54a resume and uh she said do you know this person and it was somebody that was in that telecommunications
36:01group and uh i said she said how are these people you know is this somebody that i should consider hiring and
36:09i said i'm going to be honest with you i know i know this person and they would not be faithful they
36:15miss a lot of time they would not be a good team player and she said to me well she said you kind of
36:21affirmed what i uh what i thought because when i looked over their resume uh i saw a lot of buzzwords
36:28and uh you know not not real experience or anything that would be good for our team so you kind of affirmed
36:34what i was going to do anyway so the lord was faithful and rather than uh you know me try to
36:41take vengeance on that group uh he brought a full circle and um and so yeah anyway i hope i told that
36:49well i'm kind of tired this morning so all right katie said my take back to that scott what a wonderful
36:56illustration of how god cares for his people in an environment of hostility i mean that's exactly what
37:02we're seeing in our psalm here right israel is in egypt um and of course joseph was taken down
37:09there as a prisoner right and then of course he was exalted to the throne but then israel was put
37:13in bondage by subsequent pharaohs but god took care of them and god gave them victory over their
37:20enemies and released them from that bondage so you know that's a real-life illustration of how god
37:27protected you in a hostile environment how god himself dealt with the people that were being
37:35hostile towards you you didn't have to do that yourself um and so yeah god's providential care
37:42and covenant faithfulness to you in your life history in the way in which he dealt with you and
37:48your circumstances and the people that were in your life so thanks for sharing that experience really
37:54appreciate that um you know we're uh running close to the clock here i did want to say something
38:01about the outline to this psalm okay when you look at psalm 105 uh in verses one to five we have this
38:09wonderful exhortation to give thanks to the lord and you'll notice that all of these psalms these
38:15thanksgiving psalms they all open with this wonderful declaration of praise to god uh you look
38:24at the opening of psalm 103 104 105 106 107 and they all open with these exhortations to praise the lord
38:33and to give thanks to the lord uh and then it gives all the reasons why okay and in this chapter uh we give
38:41thanks to the lord for god's covenant faithfulness to the patriarchs in verses 6 to 15 and we give
38:49thanks for god's providential care of joseph in verses 16 to 22 we give thanks to god for his mighty
38:58works through moses in verses 23 to 36 and then of course god's marvelous provision during the exodus
39:08verses 37 to 45 so this is the chronological progression that takes place and as you look at
39:15each of these segments of israel's history and you see how god dealt with abraham isaac and joseph and
39:23jacob okay abraham isaac and jacob and then you look at how he dealt with joseph and then you look at how
39:29he dealt with moses and then you look at how he dealt with the children of israel to the exodus and of course
39:36ultimately in that second last verse brought them into the land so you know what scott just did for
39:42us uh katie 7 yqt uh is he surveyed his life history and as he's looking at his life history
39:50he's saying you know here's a time in a situation in which god kept his promises to me god was faithful
39:58to me god dealt with my enemies and god protected me and so he's looking back and he's doing the
40:05verses one to five thing right he's giving thanks to the lord and you know it's incumbent upon each of
40:11us to sit down from time to time and just think back over our history and remember how god took care of
40:18each of us uh during these various phases of our life to bring us where we're at and that's the
40:26reason why you know we should be constantly giving thanks to the lord uh and returning worship and
40:34praise and gratitude to him for how he's cared for us over the unfolding process of time through his
40:42providential dealings in our lives all right any other comments on this chapter please come now with
40:48your call sign
41:04all right uh psalm 105 verse 2 sing unto him sing psalms unto him
41:09talk ye of all his wondrous works uh you know that's the essence of christian fellowship you
41:16know when you get together with other believers like a church or wherever um you know it's easy
41:21to talk about the weather and sports and that's fine um no problems with that but we need to go on
41:28and talk about the wonderful works of god what he did uh as recorded in the bible you know hey i was
41:34reading the other day about exodus and what god did here with that fifth plague and isn't that
41:39amazing right you're talking about god's wondrous works right or you could be talking about something
41:45in the book of acts you know how god took this fall of tarsus and turned him around and made him
41:51uh the great champion of the christian faith which he once persecuted the guy wrote half the new testament
41:56you know and just start sharing with other people in fellowship about god's wondrous works in your
42:02personal life and also in the lives of those that are recorded in the bible to draw attention to god
42:10to draw out praise to god and to increase people's trust in god and that's the nature of christian
42:16fellowship is sharing what god has done in history and in your life uh in the scriptures uh and in the
42:26the providential circumstances you're dealing with so make it a habit each day to talk to somebody
42:33about god's wondrous works who is god what has he done and that's what's going on in this song all
42:40right other comments please come out
42:54uh kevin kb7 zxn go ahead yeah i didn't catch all the comments i did catch some and uh uh very good
43:16you know what a wonderful thing that when god you know establishes a covenant that it can be trusted
43:26and counted on we see the evidence of that throughout this uh psalm of thanks and and praise and assurance
43:35and the wonderful thing is too is that we enjoy that same promise being grafted in to israel and uh
43:44uh you know it's genesis 17 and 7 and on through 19 we'll repeatedly talk about the everlasting covenant
43:54from uh before uh before before we can remember and long beyond uh we'll remember everlasting to
44:03everlasting and uh of course there's some temporary natures of that and i think you touched on some of
44:09those certainly the law of the circumcision and some of those things but we see also the the wonderful
44:16hope that we have in this everlasting covenant and we have it because god has gave it on his word he gave
44:23the oath upon himself as we read about in hebrews chapter 6 there as well and so uh what a wonderful
44:33hope that israel had they saw the evidence of the fulfillment of god's word uh and and and we have now
44:41seen that in many aspects that as a fulfillment uh in the uh uh coming of our messiah our savior our lord
44:51uh israel's king of kings and um and and so we through him spiritually have been brought into
45:00that same covenant uh of israel as depicted in hebrews 11 and and uh the fulfillment everlasting in
45:10you know hebrews 11 25 through 29 i think and i know there's some different views on that a more
45:16reformed perspective on that which i think you hold there max but nevertheless whichever uh view you
45:25subscribe to the wonderful hope is in our savior and is an eternal promise uh and when god uh gives
45:34his word to it and establishes the covenant that's something that we can uh certainly find great hope
45:42in in fact that is uh our hope kb7 is that example amen really well said kevin thank you for that
45:50uh you know when you look at our psalm psalm 105 uh in verses 9 and 10 it says which covenant he made
45:57with abraham and his oath unto isaac and of course the nature of a covenant is that it's an oath sworn
46:05promise um and then notice verse 10 and confirm the same unto jacob for a law and to israel for an
46:11everlasting covenant and so there's that everlasting covenant uh of the promise of of the land the seed and
46:19the blessing and of course the land was uh the canaan that was given to israel uh the blessing was
46:28that god would be their god and he would meet all of their needs and give to them his special presence
46:33revelation protection and blessing and the seed of course was isaac uh abraham and sarah who couldn't
46:40have kids were going to have a kid and a great nation was going to come out of abraham and of course
46:46the ultimate fulfillment of that is the land is the new heaven and the new earth the blessing of
46:50salvation and of course the seed is jesus christ but getting back to this everlasting covenant
46:58in hebrews chapter 13 it says no and verse 20 hebrews 13 20 now the god of peace that brought again from
47:06the dead our lord jesus that great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant
47:12make you perfect in every good work to do his will working in you that which is well pleasing in his
47:19sight through jesus christ to him be glory forever and ever amen so yeah the abrahamic covenant everlasting
47:26covenant the new covenant which is the fulfillment of the abrahamic covenant is an everlasting covenant
47:32and the point is is that god's promises are kept as long as god's as long as god's person exists
47:39and since god's person exists forever god's promises also are fulfilled forever so uh kevin thanks for
47:49pointing out that everlasting element and that uh and god's not going to say one day oh i changed my mind
47:55uh let's let's undo the new covenant and let's do something else uh no that's everlasting uh just like
48:02the abrahamic covenant was and praise the lord for that that in the midst of all the change around us we
48:08have an unchanging god we have unchanging promises and we have an unchanging salvation and an unchanging
48:16savior and that's where our stability and confidence lies um that's where security is that's where
48:24certainty and hope and optimism about the future is built on those things and so god is our rock
48:31even though everything else around us uh tends to be a bit of chaos um so praise the lord for that all
48:37right we're out of time we need to go to our prayer request a great discussion today appreciate all those
48:44who spoke up and contributed uh are there any final prayer requests before we go to prayer please come
