The Bible reading

Psalm 117

The study focused on Psalm 117, identified as the shortest chapter in the Bible. The central theme is that Israel's blessings serve as the hope for the Gentiles, demonstrating that God's mercy to Israel is the basis for the nations to praise Him. The passage is interpreted as a command for all people to acknowledge God's enduring truth and faithfulness.

Insights

  • God's desire for praise is not egotistical but a request to acknowledge the truth of His character.
  • The motive for praising God is love for Him, similar to how one speaks well of a loved one.
  • The Old Testament is saturated with references to the inclusion of Gentiles, which was often overlooked by Jewish leaders.
  • Jesus' crucifixion is viewed as the fulfillment of Psalm 117, drawing all nations to Himself.
  • The distinction between the 'power of love' and the 'love of power' explains the conflict between Christ and the Pharisees.
  • Praise is a beneficial act for the worshipper, as understanding God's nature brings greater blessing.

0:00All right, Mark, good morning to you, and we got you checked in.
0:11Thank you for being there.
0:13I was picking you up on Utah.
0:15I need to see if I can pick you up on Half Moon Bay.
0:19That generally has a lot less static on it,
0:21but today is a poor day for radio transmissions, but we're getting her done.
0:25Okay, so I got a prayer request update from Carol, KK7TPO.
0:32Carol says,
0:34Juliana, the little premature baby that we've been praying for,
0:38went home to be with the Lord a couple of days ago.
0:42So, Al, KJ7QQH, we need to change the prayer request for Carol, KK7TPO,
0:49little Juliana that we were praying for.
0:51She was born premature at 23 weeks.
0:55She didn't make it.
0:56She went home to be with the Lord.
0:58So, we need to pray for peace and comfort for the family at the loss of their little baby.
1:05Also, copy there, Ed.
1:08Go ahead.
1:16I mean, Al, KJ7QQH, did you copy the prayer request about little Juliana?
1:21Roger, roger, roger.
1:24I'm copy.
1:27Yeah, okay, so little Juliana went home to be with the Lord.
1:30Also, we need to pray for Carol's son-in-law, Chris.
1:34And this is a praise, Chris.
1:38Remember, I had back surgery, and we were praying for that.
1:43Chris had his second x-ray yesterday, and it's been released from all his restrictions.
1:48So, that's a praise the Lord.
1:50So, Carol, KK7TPO's son-in-law, Chris, his back surgery was successful,
1:57and he's released from all restrictions.
1:59So, that's a good answer to prayer.
2:01Go ahead there, Al.

8:41Appreciate that.
8:43Let me scroll down here for a second.
8:49All right, we've got Gene, K7GWR.
8:52Gene hiding there below the margin.
8:54We got you.
8:55That's Gene, K7GWR.
8:58Okay, I think I am all caught up on my SDRs.
9:02And if I've missed anybody, please forgive me.
9:07I'm a little struggling here today with the static crashes.
9:14Okay, I'll be looking things over as time goes on
9:17and make sure I've got everybody checked in.
9:19It is time for us to get started with the West Coast Bible Study.
9:23We are in Psalm 117.
9:27That's Psalm 117.
9:30And let's see.
9:33I haven't asked anybody to pray.
9:34I'll just go ahead and open a prayer myself.
9:36And I'll read this passage since it's only two verses and we'll go from there.
9:40All right, so let's pray.
9:43Our kind and gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you so much for this Bible study.
9:47Lord, we're struggling with the static crashes.
9:50We pray that you would clear those up so I can hear folks and so they can hear me.
9:55Lord, we just pray that your spirit would open the eyes of our understanding to this passage,
10:02above our fellowship and our discussion around it.
10:05I pray that it would be fruitful and that, Lord, we would go away encouraged.
10:10Your plan and purposes for our life and the goodness that you have shown to us.
10:16Father, we ask all these things in Jesus' name.
10:19Amen.
10:19All right, we are in Psalm 117.
10:24This is not only the shortest psalm in the book of Psalms, it's the shortest chapter in the entire Bible.
10:32So it's brief, only two verses, but it's also very profound in the message that it conveys.
10:40A message need not long to be rich, and much value can be contained in a small diamond.
10:51And this chapter is a small diamond.
10:53It's a precious jewel in the treasure chest of biblical truth.
10:58So just like a hand grenade isn't very big, but it's really powerful,
11:02we've got ourselves a hand grenade of a psalm here today, Psalm 117.
11:08Well, the message Psalm 117 conveys is this.
11:13Israel's blessings are the hope of the Gentiles.
11:18In other words, God has done such a great thing for Israel that the nations, upon hearing of them,
11:27would be moved to praise God for them.
11:30And in God's blessings to Israel, the nations, the Gentile nations, would find hope for themselves
11:37that they too might receive the blessings given to Israel.
11:42And of course, this is exactly how matters worked out in redemptive history.
11:46Through God's work in and through Israel, and through the Messiah that came from Israel,
11:53Gentiles the world over have come to have hope, because they too have come to know the truth of the Lord,
12:02that they too might become recipients of the merciful kindness of the Lord.
12:07And so that's the message of our passage.
12:12Now, the Old Testament, as we know, was filled with predictions and prophecies
12:16that one day the Gentiles would all be included in the blessings that Israel presently had.
12:23And the book of Isaiah and the book of Psalms were especially clear
12:27with reference to the future blessings of the Gentiles through the nation of Israel.
12:34And so Psalm 117 expresses a breadth of understanding and a depth of insight that is amazing.
12:41It shows that Israel never forgot of the mission as the mediator of God's message
12:48and saving truth to the other nations of the world.
12:53And while Israel's vision of her missionary role in bringing the knowledge of Jehovah to the rest of the world
12:59sometimes was weak, sometimes it was strong, it was never extinguished.
13:04But Israel was always conscious that she was supposed to represent Jehovah to the rest of the world.
13:12And Psalm 117 is one very clear example of that consciousness.
13:20And so the glory of the Lord is supposed to fill the whole earth.
13:23And while that glory was first shown to Israel,
13:26it burst forth from that nation to encompass all the peoples of the earth when Jesus came.
13:33And the gospel was sent to all nations to make disciples of them.
13:38So now we have hundreds of millions of Gentiles coming to praise the Lord for his truth
13:43and for his merciful kindness, all of which flowed out of God's previous and initial revelation to Israel of himself.
13:54So anyway, Psalm 114 points to the reality that the blessings that are brought to Israel are to flow outward to the Gentile nations.
14:05And the reason why we have the worldwide blessings of the gospel today
14:10is because of God's expansive work first in Israel and then to the rest of the world.
14:17All right, let's read together Psalm 117.
14:20Psalm 117, Psalm 117 says in verse 1,
14:24Oh, praise the Lord, all ye nations.
14:28Praise him, all ye people.
14:32For his merciful kindness is great toward us,
14:35and the truth of the Lord endures forever.
14:39Praise ye the Lord.
14:42All right, any comments on our psalm?
14:45Please come down.
14:46KM5F.
14:47KM5F, please go ahead, Will.
14:50Yeah, I did some research yesterday, and I noticed in verse 2 where it says,
14:55The truth of the Lord is everlasting.
14:58Several versions use the phrase,
15:00The Lord's faithfulness endures forever.
15:03And I found that in a lot of the newer versions.
15:06KM5F.
15:07Well, you know, both statements are true, and I didn't look at the Hebrew, so I can't comment on the translation.
15:17But yeah, the King James says the truth of the Lord endures forever.
15:20Other versions you're saying say the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
15:26Both of those things are true.
15:27And both of them result in the blessings that Israel has.
15:33Israel is blessed with the truth of God.
15:36Israel is blessed by the faithfulness of God.
15:40The truth, of course, is the revelation of the Old Testament.
15:43The faithfulness of God is his keeping his covenant promises to his people.
15:48And so he reveals his truth.
15:50He's faithful to his promises.
15:52And therein lay the blessings of Israel.
15:56So, Will, thank you for pointing that out.
15:59I was unaware of that different translation.
16:02All right.
16:02Any other comments on our passage, please?
16:04Come now.
16:05Follow up?
16:06Follow up.
16:07Go ahead.
16:07Stevie.
16:09Yeah, my understanding and the way I read it was that the Lord's faithfulness is his truth,
16:14and the truth is his faithfulness.
16:16Can't find us.
16:17Okay, copy that.
16:19Well, yeah.
16:22Okay, God is faithful to his truth, and his truth is faithful.
16:27So, yeah, that's a good way to view it as well.
16:30Thank you for that, Will.
16:31Okay, other comments.
16:32Please come now.
16:36AK60K.
16:37AK60K.
16:38Go ahead, Jeff.
16:40Here's a quick little commentary that's really kind of interesting.
16:43In talking about this song with my children last night, I asked them,
16:47why is it that God commands us to praise him?
16:49My six-year-old son, Luke, quickly answered and said, because God is greedy for praise.
16:56He then quickly added in a good way.
16:59How about that one?
17:01Yeah, well, you know, the thing of it is, is that, you know, it can seem like God is egotistical
17:08because he requires us to praise him.
17:12But it's not that God is greedy for praise like we are.
17:18You know, when we want to be praised, it's because we're egotistical, right?
17:22But God's desire for praise is not an egotistical thing.
17:30You know, it's who he is and it's what he is.
17:34And the praise that we give to him is a declaration of truth.
17:39And so the second thing is, is not only is it a declaration of truth, it's also a blessing to us.
17:48Because the more we understand about God, the greater the blessing we receive.
17:54And so as we praise God, benefit flows to us.
17:58You know, it's not an act of flattery to say that Donald Trump is the president of the United States, you know.
18:09Now it's an honorable thing to be the president of the United States, whoever it is, right?
18:14I'm not doing politics here.
18:15I'm doing position.
18:17And so if I say Donald Trump is the president of the United States, is that giving him some honor?
18:23Well, absolutely it is.
18:24Is it because I'm trying to stroke his ego?
18:29I'm not, okay?
18:30I'm just telling the truth about what he is.
18:34Knowing that information is beneficial to me.
18:37And so it's not a great analogy.
18:40It's one I just pulled off my head.
18:42But the point is, is that when we say about God that he's holy and he's just and he's merciful and he's kind and he's gracious, we're just telling the truth, okay?
18:52We're not issuing flattery.
18:56Flattery is giving someone praise for something they don't deserve.
19:01And so praise is giving someone recognition for what they do deserve.
19:05So, number one, when we praise God, we're telling the truth.
19:09And number two, as we praise God, we receive benefit from that, okay?
19:15It's the fulfillment of what we were made to be, number one.
19:18And number two, it's a better understanding of who God is.
19:21And the better we understand God, the greater blessing we have.
19:24So, you know, when God says that we're to praise him, he's not being egotistical.
19:31He's simply asking us to acknowledge the truth about who he is.
19:35And acknowledging that truth, we're blessed by an understanding of that truth.
19:39Back to you there, Jeff, AK6OK.
19:41Yeah, very interesting.
19:44And I notice also that the first sentence here, it is not a suggestion.
19:52It is a demand or it is a command to praise the Lord over.
19:58Yes, it is.
19:59And it's there twice, right?
20:01Oh, praise the Lord, all ye nations.
20:04Praise him, all ye people.
20:06So there's no one who is exempt from the responsibility to praise the Lord.
20:12And twice we're told to do that.
20:14And you're exactly right, Jeff.
20:15That is not a suggestion.
20:17That is a command.
20:18And that's what we are created to be.
20:20You know, we have to go back and remember who we are, okay?
20:23God created us on the sixth day out of the dust of the earth.
20:28He breathed into us the breath of life.
20:30And the first thing he did was start giving commands to Adam.
20:36And then, of course, once Eve was created, to her.
20:41And so the very first words out of God's mouth to Adam once he was created is,
20:47Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
20:50Don't eat the tree of the knowledge of the good and evil.
20:54Kind and fill and keep the garden.
20:56And so these have to have dominion over the earth.
21:01All of his initial communications to Adam were commands.
21:06And so we were created to be commanded.
21:09We were created to serve and to carry out the will of God.
21:15And we were created to acknowledge his authority and sovereignty over us
21:20and to recognize that and to yield to that.
21:24So that's who we are.
21:26We are created to praise.
21:28And so praise is not an option for us.
21:31It's an obligation upon us.
21:33But what a joyful obligation.
21:35You know, it's kind of like when you say to someone,
21:38You know, you're obligated to feed your child.
21:40Well, yeah, right.
21:41I love to feed my child.
21:43Certainly don't want my child to starve.
21:45And so these are joyful obligations to praise the Lord.
21:51There's nothing, there's no job that we could do that would bring us greater joy than to praise the Lord.
22:00Back to you there, Jeff.
22:01AK-6-OK.
22:02Thanks very much, Max.
22:06And, yes, this points back to Paul's quote in Romans 15, 11, almost identically.
22:14Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and extol him, all you peoples.
22:18So this isn't directed at Israel.
22:21This is directed at every human being, it looks like to me.
22:26So, excellent.
22:28It's a short, very short psalm, of course.
22:32Shortest one in the book, in the Bible.
22:35However, it has some very, very deep meaning, and it covers everybody over.
22:40Yeah, copy that.
22:41And thank you for pointing out Romans 11.
22:44I'd like for us all, put your bookmarker here in Psalm 117.
22:49And all of you turn to Romans 15 in your Bible.
22:53I want to spend a little time in Romans 15.
22:56So, Romans chapter 15 has this really interesting section in it, in verses 8 to 13.
23:06So, Romans 15, notice, if you will, verse 8.
23:10It says here, verse 8,
23:12Now, I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God,
23:20to confirm the promises made to the fathers.
23:24So, when it says Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision, it means he's a minister to the Jews, okay?
23:31Jesus came to his own people.
23:33He was a Jew.
23:35His primary ministry was to the Jews.
23:37That's what verse 8 is saying.
23:38Now, notice verse 9.
23:41And, in addition to that, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy.
23:48So, Jesus came for the Jews, verse 8.
23:51Jesus came for the Gentiles, verse 9.
23:54As it is written, verse 9, it says,
23:57For this cause I will confess thee among the Gentiles, and sing thy name.
24:04Now, this is a quote, and in verse 9, it's a quote of Psalm 1849, all right?
24:10Now, notice verse 10.
24:12And, again, he says, here's another quote,
24:15Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.
24:18And, that's a quote of Deuteronomy 32, 43.
24:23And, now, notice verse 11.
24:25Here's the verse that Jeff was referring to.
24:28Verse 11, again,
24:29Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud him, all ye people.
24:33Well, that's a quote of Psalm 117, and verse 1, our passage today.
24:39And, now, notice verse 12.
24:41And, again, Isaiah says,
24:43There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles.
24:50In him shall the Gentiles trust.
24:53And, that is a quote of Isaiah 11, and verse 10.
24:57Now, here's the conclusion.
24:59Paul's writing to the Romans a bunch of Gentiles, right?
25:02Verse 13,
25:04Now, the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost.
25:15And, so, Jesus Christ, verse 8, was a minister to the Jews to fulfill the promises made to the Jews.
25:22And, verse 9, he was a minister to the Gentiles as the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy.
25:29And, so, that's exactly what our psalm, Psalm 117, is talking about.
25:34Now, turn back to Psalm 117.
25:37All right?
25:38Notice Psalm 117, verse 1.
25:41Oh, praise the Lord, all you nations.
25:43That's the Gentiles, right?
25:45And, praise him, all you people.
25:48That's just the folks in general across the face of the earth.
25:51Now, why should they do that?
25:53And, what grounds do they have for doing that?
25:56Verse 2.
25:57For his merciful kindness is great toward us.
26:00That's the Jews.
26:02And, the truth of the Lord endures forever that he showed to the Jews.
26:07So, the bottom line is, is that the Gentiles are being exhorted to draw near to the Lord, praise the Lord, embrace the Lord,
26:16on the basis of his previous, prior ministry to the Gentiles.
26:24His merciful kindness has been great to the Jews.
26:26Verse 2.
26:27Therefore, the Gentiles should praise him and draw near to him.
26:31So, what we have is, you know, that the gospel came to the Jews first, but also to the Gentiles.
26:39And, that's the wonderful message of the psalm, is that it was designed to remind Israel of her mission to the Gentiles.
26:48And, it's to remind the Gentiles that God's goodness to the Jews is going to be extended to them as well,
26:54and they need to start praising him for it now.
26:57All right.
26:58WB7MAX here.
26:59Other comments on our passage?
27:01Please come down with your call sign.
27:05WB7VZL.
27:06Roger.
27:07WB7VZL.
27:07Please go ahead.
27:09And, it reminds all of us who are into the covenants that Genesis 12, verse 3,
27:19and the blessing of Abraham, you know, he came out of Babylon.
27:25You know, that was his home.
27:27And, he's called out,
27:29And, in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
27:35So, that is just, this is the inception, so to speak, going back to Genesis 3, 15, that God had a seed that he wanted to supply to restore, to restore the fallen Adam by the second Adam.
27:55Oliver?
27:59Amen, Roger.
28:00Really well said.
28:02And, thank you for pointing out the Abrahamic covenant, Genesis 12, 1-3, where God said to Abraham, and here God's starting the Jewish nation, right?
28:11Abraham was like the progenitor, and while he's telling Abraham that he's going to be the father of a special nation, he also tells him he's going to be the father of many nations.
28:25And, so, right from the very beginning of God's establishment of the Jewish nation, the Gentile nations were included and declared to be recipients of the special relationship God was going to have with Abraham and with his descendants.
28:44And, so, you know, what's amazing is the Old Testament is just saturated with statements about the inclusion of the Gentiles into the blessings of Abraham and the Abrahamic covenant and the blessings of the Jewish nation.
29:02And, in light of the fact that the Old Testament is saturated with these references, it's shocking to me when you read the Gospels and you read the book of Acts, how hostile the Jews were towards the Gentiles.
29:19And, it was like they treated the Gentiles like they were just the off-scouring of the earth, when, in fact, their scriptures were saturated with reference to the fact that they were supposed to be brought into the kingdom and they were supposed to inherit the blessings of the Abrahamic covenant, as you well said.
29:38And, so, the Jews didn't believe their own scriptures, many of them, about the inclusion of the Gentiles.
29:45And, that's why they had such a hard time when the church began with the inclusion of the Gentiles.
29:55And, you remember, there was this giant controversy in Acts chapter 15 about whether the Gentiles needed to be circumcised before they could become Christians, because they have to become Jews first.
30:07And, the Old Testament, as I said, is saturated with references to the fact that they come in as Gentiles.
30:13So, Roger, thank you for pointing out, not only the foundation that was there in the Abrahamic covenant for the inclusion of the Gentiles, but also, what's interesting is how poorly they recognized that and carried that out.
30:30Back to you there, Roger.
30:31Yeah, that's the foundation, that God had a plan, and he wanted people to mature it.
30:43Given free choice, they were able to choose to be part of this community of love.
30:51And, I think that Jeff's illustration points out, in a sense, the very kernel of the controversy that started, that we have insight in, in Revelation 12.
31:07That there were forces in heaven, that we're wrestling with the temptation of Lucifer.
31:16Is this God that we're serving, is he running things by the power of love?
31:24Or, is he one who loves power?
31:30So, the power of love versus the love of power.
31:34And so, as we see the scriptures, Jesus ultimately had to pour out himself, totally, totally, to illustrate, in John 3.16, that it is not a love of power, but the power of love.
31:55Over.
31:55Yeah, well said, Roger.
32:00Thank you for that.
32:02And, yeah, you know, one of the things we have to recognize is that the Jewish nation was a mixed bag.
32:09You know, all you had to do to be a Jew was to be a descendant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, right?
32:15And you had to be circumcised on the eighth day.
32:18And you were in the Jewish nation.
32:20And because of that, the Jewish nation was a mixed multitude.
32:23Some of them were saved, and some of them weren't.
32:27And we see throughout the history of Israel that, as a general rule, the saved people were in the minority.
32:35And so, when you see all this hostility, Jews, towards the Gentiles and their inclusion, what you realize is these are Jews who are unsaved.
32:44Therefore, as you well said, Roger, they're driven by Satan, and therefore they're driven by a love of power.
32:52And so, when they saw others being brought in, they resented that because they thought it would undermine their power.
33:01And you really see that in the interplay between Jesus and the Jewish leaders during his lifetime, Caiaphas and Annas.
33:11And they said, you know, what shall we do?
33:14If we leave this man alone, he'll take away our place and our nation.
33:19And so, they were way more concerned about their political power, their love of power, as you well said, Roger, than they were about the power of love.
33:32That is, seeing people reconciled to God.
33:35Because they weren't reconciled to God, they didn't care about other people being reconciled to God.
33:42All they cared about was people bowing and scraping before them and acknowledging their power.
33:48So, yes, Jesus came exercising the power of love, and the Pharisees and the Jews came exercising the love of power.
33:59And you can see how those two forces are conflict.
34:02You can also see who wins.
34:05Jesus won through the power of love.
34:08And, you know, he says, by this shall all men know you're my disciples if you have love one toward another.
34:15And that's why we constantly read in the New Testament, hey, there's neither Jew nor Gentile, there's neither bond nor free, there's neither rich nor poor, there's neither male nor female.
34:25You're all one in Christ.
34:27Okay, other comments.
34:28Please come now.
34:30KM5F?
34:30Well, KM5F, go ahead.
34:32Yeah, I found an interesting note here.
34:34It says, if you open your Bible and turn to the exact center, you will find Psalm 117.
34:38So the center of almost anything is the core.
34:42Well, here we have the core being praise the Lord for his unfailing love and his faithfulness, which endures forever.
34:50KM5F?
34:52Well said.
34:53So Psalm 117 is the center of the Bible.
34:56And what's the central message of the Bible?
34:58Well, it's praise the Lord for his truth and for his faithfulness.
35:02So, Will, thanks for pointing that out.
35:05That is very interesting.
35:08All right.
35:08I have a comment here by text message from Dave AI7QQ.
35:15And Dave says this, so glad our founding fathers figured this morning's message out.
35:21George Washington said that our national blessing is tied to obedience.
35:27And this is a quote from George Washington's Thanksgiving proclamation in 1789.
35:36George Washington said this, it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, and to humbly implore his protection and favor.
35:50Steve AI7QQ, thank you for pointing out that quote, that our own president, Washington, back in 1789, understood Psalm 117 and the fact that it was the duty of all nations to acknowledge God, to obey God, and to pray for his protection.
36:10Because the God of the Bible is the God of the nations, not just the God of Israel.
36:17All right.
36:18Other comments.
36:18Please come down.
36:19Steve, YSI.
36:21Steve, YSI, go ahead.
36:22YSI, go ahead.
36:24Yeah, on a personal note, I like to praise God.
36:30I love to praise God.
36:32And the reason I love to praise God is because I've learned to love him in all of his dealings, especially how the Spirit has guided and directed me.
36:44And John, in his first epistle, in 1 John 4, 19, he says, we love, I love because he first loved me.
36:57Steve, thank you for following up on that comment from Jeff AK6OK and his little grandson.
37:09We love to praise God.
37:10We love to praise God because we love God.
37:13Now, you stop and think about it for a minute, people.
37:16There is someone in your life that you really love a lot.
37:19Maybe it's your wife.
37:20Maybe it's your husband.
37:22Maybe it's a mom or dad, whoever.
37:24You love that person.
37:25So what do you like to do?
37:27You like to tell others about that person, and you like to speak well of them.
37:31You know, we see people doing this with reference to their heroes, right?
37:37And they like to extol them.
37:39They like to honor them.
37:41Why?
37:41Because they love them.
37:43And so, Jeff, this goes back to, Jeff AK6OK, this goes back to the comment to your grandson, you know, when he said he's greedy for praise, saying,
37:55no, you know, we love to praise God because we love God.
38:00And so it's like your grandson.
38:02You love him.
38:03So what do you do?
38:03You tell other people how smart he is.
38:06You tell other people how well he's doing in school.
38:09You tell other people about his new athletic accomplishments.
38:14Why?
38:14Because you love him, and you want other people to know about him and be blessed by the same person you're blessed by.
38:21So, Steve, excellent point.
38:23Thank you for bringing it out.
38:25The motive for praise is love for the object of praise.
38:30And because we love them, then we love to talk about them and tell others how wonderful they are.
38:37Great insight, Steve.
38:38Thank you for that.
38:39All right.
38:40Other comments.
38:40Please come down.
38:44K.J. 7 PBT.
38:45Did you copy Mark out there?
38:52No, Mark, K.J. 7 PBT.
38:55Please come back to me.
38:59Yes, can you hear me, Max?
39:04I can hear you now.
39:05Go ahead.
39:07This is K.J. 7 PBT.
39:13Yeah, he's got you, Mark.
39:14Excuse me, Mark.
39:16Half moon.
39:18So, this is an LL Psalm.
39:21These are all great comments, and I've got a short time here.
39:25These are all LL Psalms, as we remember here.
39:28And they are verses 113 through 118.
39:34And they were sung at the Passover.
39:44We heard that yesterday and today, and we're still following up on that.
39:49But there's some interesting things.
39:52At the face of Passover, seven times.
39:56So, imagine, after each of these pastings of the Passover, seven times, they would sing one of these songs.
40:07So, between each of the past, they would sing some expositor, say the Psalms 113 and 114.
40:17And that's clear here and there, but that's what they think, Captain.
40:29So, that's the important thing, as we ask.
40:33So, in Matthew chapter 26, verses 30, we see Jesus and his disciples through the Passover meal.
40:55And they have handed this cup for about seven times, and they have sung these songs.
41:03And then, at the end, when they had sung it again, they've helped us out and out of all of us.
41:08That's the short read that we read, Matthew 26.
41:17Back to you, Max.
41:40Yeah, Max, did you copy him? I had a rough time there.
41:43Yeah, I got that. I got it.
41:45Yeah, I just had to write down the reference to Matthew 26, 18 through 30.
41:49Okay, WB7MAX here.
41:52Mark, KJ7PVT.
41:54I got most of what he said.
41:56There were some static crashes there that were bothering the transmission.
42:02But he was emphasizing, once again, that these psalms were sung at the Passover.
42:08And the fact that they would share the cup seven times, and after each sharing of the cup, they would sing one of these psalms together.
42:20And Mark was encouraging us to read Matthew 26, verses 18 through 30.
42:26And we don't have time to read that, because we're about out of time.
42:30But in Matthew 26, verse 30, it says here, it says,
42:43When they had sung a hymn, they went out into the Mount of Olives.
42:46And so the idea here is that they celebrated the Passover, and Psalm 118, which we're going to be looking at tomorrow, probably would have been that last psalm that they sang together.
42:58So the point is, is that at the Passover meal, they sang Psalm 117.
43:03And so, in the Passover meal, Jesus was recognizing that he was going to die, not just for the Jews, he was going to die for the Gentiles as well.
43:15And you remember earlier in John chapter 12, he said, I, and if I be lifted up, I will draw all men to myself.
43:22So, he says, if I'm lifted up on the cross, I'm going to draw not just the Jews, but the Gentiles.
43:28Because you remember, a couple of Gentiles came to Jesus, or to the disciples, and said, we want to see Jesus.
43:38And Jesus looked at these Gentiles coming in John chapter 12, and says, when I'm crucified, these people are the people that I'm going to draw to myself.
43:48So Christ was very conscious.
43:50In the Passover meal, singing this hymn, Psalm 117, and also throughout his ministry, as Gentiles approached him, that he was going to be providing redemption for all of them.
44:05So, Mark, that's about the best I got from what I was able to hear from you.
44:09Thank you for those comments.
44:11I appreciate that.
44:13Okay, let's see.
44:15I think we've got about 30 seconds left here.
44:17Any more brief comments?
44:19Come now.
44:19Does that make sense?
44:21That's a good point.
44:22I don't know.
44:22Is that L?
44:24No, it could be seven.
44:25Does that make sense?
44:25Thanks.
44:26Yeah, just briefly, I caught part of the comments, and I'm sure you covered the quote directly from Romans there, too, by Paul.
44:34But, you know, one of the wonderful things about this, too, and great point.
44:40I didn't hear all of Mark's comments, either, but I heard your summary there, Max.
44:46And exactly, this is someone, he kind of doubled down on it in the Hebrew to make sure he's calling all people, all nations.
44:58This is everyone on earth to call, of course, to praise our God.
45:03But then the second verse, he gives the reason why, because his loving kindness is great, and his truth is everlasting.
45:12So he even gives us the theological reason for that.
45:16But we also see in this, this is in present tense.
45:20So, you know, you think back in this time when this was sent, and this was created as part of this psalm or the hymn, Israel was in focus.
45:30Israel was the one in covenant here, and primarily, but we see here that God's plan all along was for all nations to turn to God, to give him praise.
45:45And as we know now, in the new covenant we're in, that is fulfilled here.
45:52And you can imagine, as they're sitting in the upper room, and Christ is just preparing to go to the cross there at the Last Supper, them singing this hymn.
46:04I can only imagine this probably remained in their minds and their hearts in the following days after, you know, this hymn, after these events that followed with Christ and the cross and the resurrection.
46:22KB 7, is that acceptable?
46:24Yeah, Kevin, thank you for that.
46:26Appreciate that.
46:26You know, it reminds me, Kevin, of this passage in Ephesians chapter 2.
46:30It says, remember that in times past you were Gentiles, without Christ, aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, strangers from the covenant, the promise, having no hope, and without God in the world.
46:44That was the condition of the Gentiles.
46:46But Ephesians 2.13, but now in Christ Jesus, you who sometime were far off are made near by the blood of Christ.
46:54And so he reconciled both unto God into one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby, and came and preached peace to you which were far off, that's the Gentiles, and to them who were near, that's the Jews, for through him we both have access by one spirit unto the Father.
47:15So this marvelous, expansive saving plan of God in saving the Gentiles was something that was spoken of constantly in the Old Testament.
47:27It was something that was revealed and really enforced in the New Testament.
47:33And we have so much to be thankful for with reference to the fact that we, I think most of us here, are Gentiles and that we've been included in God's saving plan.
47:46All right, we are done with our Bible study.
47:48We are out of time.
47:50We need to go to prayer.
47:52We might turn to prayer today, so I will do that.
47:54Are there any final prayer requests before we go to prayer?
47:57Please come now at your call sign.
48:03All right, well, let's go to the Lord in prayer.
48:06Our Father, we thank you so much for this passage.
48:10Thank you, Lord, that your saving plans did not just be, were not just limited to one small nation and one geographical place.
48:20But the Lord, your purposes are to save people all throughout the world, from every kindred, tongue, tribe, and nation.
48:27Thank you that the Great Commission was to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations.
48:34Lord, thank you for the people who went into our world and made disciples of us.
48:39Father, we look back at the person that led us to Christ or the means by which we were brought to saving faith.
48:46We realize that that came to us through people who gave us Bibles, who gave us gospel tracts, who gave us sermons, who gave us personal witness.
48:55And then, Lord, we thank you for drawing us to yourself through your Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ.
49:04And now, Lord, we just pray that your blessing would be on us.
49:08Lord, we have some requests we want to bring to you.
49:11Lord, first of all, we just want to thank you for our dear brother, Roger, WB7BZL up there in Colville, Washington.
49:18Help him, Father, to finish up the task he has there.
49:21Give him a safe trip home today, back to Walla Walla.
49:24Lord, we just pray for Keith K7NEB and his dog, Buck, that he would have a successful second surgery for his intestinal issues.
49:34Father, just pray that you would save Buck's life and give him a long life for Keith K7NEB.
49:41Lord, we pray for George K1KOY.
49:45Lord, George lost his wife Pamela to cancer back in July.
49:51Lord, we pray for comfort for George and his family.
49:55Lord, these things are really difficult.
50:00And, Lord, we just pray for peace and comfort for George over the loss of his wife Pamela.
50:06Father, help him to adjust to his new life.
50:08And I pray that the family would really pull together in support and comfort and encourage each other.
50:15Lord, we just pray for all those who are dealing with cancer.
50:18Lord, that you might give them wisdom in how to deal with it in peace when it's your will to take them home through it.
50:26Father, we just want to continue to pray for Al KJ7QQH and the healing of his hand from his tendon contraction.
50:33Lord, I pray for a successful phase 2 procedure today and minimal pain and swelling.
50:41And so, Lord, as Al goes back to the doctor for a second round,
50:45Lord, I just pray that that would be successful in releasing the tension that's in that tendon.
50:52Lord, we just want to pray for Charles N7DEN.
50:56His son Trevor passed away from cancer on October 11th.
50:59True, Lord, we pray for peace and comfort for his family.
51:05Lord, may the peace that passes all understanding fill his heart and mind as he contemplates his son being with you
51:13and of the day that he will be reunited with her, with him, with me.
51:18Father, we just want to pray for Ted KK70QQ.
51:22We pray for his sister Pamela who's suffering with acid reflux and coughing fits.
51:27Lord, I pray for Pamela that you'd be pleased to bring her relief.
51:34Father, we just want to pray for our sister Carol KK70PO for peace and comfort of the family members of newborn baby Juliana
51:44who returned to the Lord after being born premature at 23 weeks.
51:49The Lord gave and the Lord took away, blessed be the name of the Lord.
51:55And, Father, we just ask that you would help those who were involved in Juliana's life
52:02to just have peace over your dealings and seeing fit to take her instead of preserve her.
52:11Lord, we bow before that decision.
52:15And, Lord, we know that you do all things well.
52:18And so, Lord, we trust you with the choice that you made.
52:23Father, we just want to praise you for Carol's son-in-law, Chris,
52:28who has been released from restrictions from his recent back surgery.
52:33Lord, we're just grateful that surgery was successful,
52:35and we're grateful that he's able to negotiate life so much better now.
52:40And, Lord, thank you for that.
52:42Lord, we continue to pray for our brother Dave AI7QQ and his ministry to Noah
52:47and his ministry in the prison.
52:51Lord, I just pray that you would cause Noah to persevere in the faith,
52:55continue to walk with you,
52:57and, Lord, shield him from evil companions and from bad influences,
53:02cause him to hunger and thirst after reading the Bible,
53:05and, Lord, I pray that Dave's ongoing discipleship of Noah
53:09would be hugely successful in Noah's life.
53:14And, Lord, as Dave ministers, especially in the youth facility there,
53:19may you bring others to saving faith in Jesus.
53:22Father, we just thank you for Jerry KG6J and his boss, Rochelle,
53:28as she endures chemo treatment on her neck cancer,
53:32and she's starting radiation today.
53:34And so, Lord, she's going to be having both radiation and chemo at the same time.
53:40Lord, give her special strength.
53:41And, Lord, I pray that through this, this cancer would be destroyed.
53:46Father, we just pray for Jerry as he goes to physical therapy today.
53:53Lord, may it be effective in helping him have good balance and freedom from back pain.
53:58Father, we pray for Ed N660H's brother-in-law, Ed,
54:04that you would resolve his heart arrhythmia.
54:07I pray that he'd soon be able to get in to see that specialist.
54:12And then, Father Gene, K7GWR, ask us to pray for Laura, KD7RID.
54:17Lord, it sounds like she's approaching the end of her life.
54:23And, Lord, I pray for peace and comfort as her condition has become terminal.
54:28It looks like she's not going to make it.
54:31Lord, I pray that her passing into your arms would be easy and peaceful,
