The Bible reading
Psalm 119:65-96
The West Coast Bible Study group gathered to read and discuss Psalm 119, verses 65 through 96. The passage is part of an acrostic psalm that meditates on the goodness and faithfulness of God, particularly in times of adversity. The study highlighted the psalmist's declaration that God has dealt well with him according to His word, even when facing affliction and persecution from the arrogant.
Insights
- The acrostic structure of Psalm 119 was a mnemonic device used to memorize and preserve the Word of God when written scriptures were not readily available to every individual.
- The 'Torah Psalms' (1, 19, and 119) are distinct in their sole focus on praising the beauty and authority of the Pentateuch, with Psalm 119 being the longest chapter in the Bible.
- The comparison of God's law to 'thousands of gold and silver' challenges the modern pursuit of material wealth by highlighting the eternal utility of Scripture for the soul.
- The metaphor of the 'wineskin in the smoke' can be interpreted as a sign of maturity and preservation, suggesting that seasoned believers remain faithful to God's decrees despite life's irritations.
- The study emphasized that God's discipline is an act of faithfulness, similar to a parent correcting a child, intended to mature believers and equip them for ministry.
- The availability of the Bible in English is a result of the sacrifice of figures like William Tyndale, a fact that underscores the immense value of the text to believers today.

9:30our way through it it is a prayer of a man of god about the word of god to the god who inspired that
9:36word and so this whole psalm is a psalm about the scriptures and about the psalmist's interaction with
9:43the scriptures and with the god who inspired them so steve uh w6ysi if you could please read for us
9:50psalm 119 verses 65 to 96 go ahead there steve all right uh psalm 119 starting in verse 65 i'm reading
10:03from the new american standard version thou hast dealt well with thy servant o lord according to thy word
10:15teach me good discernment and knowledge for i believe in thy commandments
10:23before i was afflicted i went astray
10:27but now i keep thy word
10:29word thou art good and doest good teach me my statutes
10:38the arrogant have forged a lie against me with all my heart i will observe thy precepts
10:47their heart is covered with fat but i delight in thy law it is good for me that i was afflicted
10:59that i may learn thy statutes the law of thy mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces
11:08god verse 73
11:17my hands made me and fashioned me give me understanding that i may learn my commandments
11:25may those who fear thee see me and be glad because i wait for thy word
11:31i know lord that thy judgments are righteous and that in faithfulness thou have afflicted me
11:44oh may thy loving kindness comfort me according to thy word to thy servant
11:50may thy compassion come to me that i may live for thy law is my delight
12:00may the arrogant be ashamed for they subvert me with a lie
12:05but i shall meditate on thy precepts may those who fear thee turn to me even those
12:16who know thy testimonies may my heart be blameless in thy statutes that i may not be ashamed
12:26ashamed
12:33my soul languishes for thy salvation
12:37i wait for thy word
12:41my eyes fail with longing for thy word while i say when wilt thou comfort me
12:47me though i have become like a wine skin in the smoke i do not forget thy statutes
12:58how many are the days of thy servant when wilt thou excuse or execute judgment on those who persecute me
13:10the arrogant have dug pits for me men who are not in accord with thy law
13:19all thy commandments are faithful they have persecuted me with a lie help me
13:27they almost destroyed me on earth as for me i did not forsake thy precepts
13:34revives me according to thy loving kindness so that i may keep testimony thy mouth
13:46amen
13:49verse 89
13:52forever oh lord thy word is settled in heaven
13:58my faithfulness continues throughout all generations
14:01thou didst establish the earth and it stands
14:08they stand this day according to thine ordinances
14:12for all things are thy servants
14:18if thy law had not been my delight then i would have perished in my affliction
14:24i will never forget thy precepts for by them thou hast revived me
14:35i am thine save me for i have sought thy precepts
14:41the wicked wait for me destroy me i shall diligently consider thy testimonies
14:48i have seen a limit to all perfection my commandment is exceedingly broad
14:59it's further reading god's word
15:05steve w6ysi thank you so much for that scripture reading really appreciate that
15:11uh the net would like to acknowledge joe k87 wbb joe see you there on the half moon bay sdr
15:17appreciate you being there uh that's joe from battleground washington all right uh any comments
15:23on this section that steve has read to us uh please come now if you call
15:28okay b7 zedex in uh kevin kb7 zedex in please go ahead
15:36well what a wonderful reading of the text there steve thank you for that
15:40and um i know over the last couple days there's been some wonderful thoughts and insights shared
15:47on on this psalm and as you pointed out i know initially max in the introduction you know this
15:54is an acrostic psalm and here we look at four uh you know eight verses per uh hebrew letter as they
16:03go through and one of the things to keep in mind and this may have been mentioned as well you know at
16:08this time that this was written the word of god was just not readily available to every person
16:13and so this is one of the techniques and methods used oftentimes to keep the principles and the
16:20word of god in in one's heart and of course this psalm speaks of the word of god and you know throughout
16:27the psalm i think there's only five verses that don't contain somewhere uh one of the words for the
16:34for the law of god for the scriptures for the uh you know covenants of god for the writings of god
16:40and and uh but here in this section here we start with we cover um just uh one verse short of uh four
16:50letters and starting with the hebrew word test which is the beginning of the or representative of the word
16:58toe which means good and we see in these eight first eight verses where steve started reading here
17:04uh he fully immerses the text in that character of god the goodness of god and i was thinking about an
17:16illustration i heard once of a farmer who had uh just his crops were doing quite well he had a you know
17:25some pretty large uh crops there he farmed a lot of acreage but a hail storm came through in about 11 12
17:33minutes he was completely wiped out and uh that evening in their church service they come in and
17:42and uh we're having a prayer meeting and and he stood up and he says the good lord has always dealt
17:49good with me and sat back down well that's what i picture here you know this person uh writing this
17:55uh clearly is going through some huge uh uh adversity in his life but nevertheless recognition is not is is
18:06is that god is always good and god has dealt good with him and and what i love about these psalms here is
18:15is the focus is on god uh here and and especially in the first section not about what was me and we see
18:24that uh coming up here where uh um you know the the representative of old age and and looking for god for the uh
18:33answers but here we see just the focus through the adversity is is god has always dealt good with me
18:42and i think that's a wonderful place to start uh because we all going to face very difficult times in our
18:48life many of us have and and i'm sure there will there'll be more to come but uh what a perspective
18:54to have here uh god has always dealt good with me tb7 does that accept yeah kevin thank you for pointing
19:03out verse 65 thou hast dealt well with thy servant oh lord according to thy word and you know god does deal
19:10well with us he doesn't intend evil to us and while some of the providences are kind of negative like you said
19:17good uh a hail storm goes through wipes out the crop uh nevertheless god is working all things
19:23together for good for us and that kind of goes along with that verse 68 thou art good and doest good
19:31so because god is good he does good and then he does good toward us and he works all things together
19:38for good and we can lose sight of the goodness of god in the midst of our adversities but uh you know
19:45even when god allowed all those terrible things to happen to job in job chapter one and two
19:51uh god was really uh doing job good during that time uh as we see uh when we come to the conclusion
20:00of the book i'm sure that job looking back says you know the lord has done all things well and even in
20:07our adversities he uses them to mature us he uses them to strengthen us he uses them to equip us and prepare
20:15us for ministry uh uses them to make us like his son jesus christ so uh the bible says in everything
20:23give thanks for this is the will of god in christ jesus concerning you and so we can give thanks for
20:29everything because everything is intended for good and works together for good even though the thing
20:35itself may be quite a negative circumstance in our life i thank you kevin appreciate that all right any
20:42other comments please come down if your call front all right we've got mark kj7 pbt go ahead mark
20:56thank you max uh this this particular massive it reminds me of walking through um margie and i went hiking a few years ago
21:08when we were on the pacific crest trail and uh we were out there all by ourselves and and it takes
21:17quite a while to do that and as you walk through this massive area when you're all done you can look
21:24back and say well there were all these different sections that we walked through in each one of them
21:29uh without just kind of making a run for the thing and never and never stopping to actually sit and take
21:38it all in which is something we were able to do whenever you're out in the wilderness uh just stop for
21:47a minute and look around what's ahead of you what's behind you what's around you what are the what are the
21:52beautiful things that are going on that's kind of what we're doing here in the middle of of psalms and
22:00to uh talk about something that i've i've brought up a number of times and and we have new people
22:07joining all of the time i'm reminded of uh the idea that the psalms is written in five sections
22:16uh just like uh genesis exodus leviticus numbers and deuteronomy and and i'm i'm doing this for a
22:28reason because there's a really interesting piece of this that has to do with uh the particular psalm
22:36that we're in now so i'm going to go back a section here for a section and say psalms 73 through 18 uh
22:44excuse me psalms 1 through 41 is the genesis song and it focuses on the humanity creation and blessing
22:55psalms 42 through 72 is book two and it focuses on the themes the national ruin redemption and rescue
23:06psalms 73 through 89 is book three and that's the leviticus psalm and i'll
23:14i know this is going to be long so let me just speed up ahead here the last group that we're in
23:19right now is psalm 107 through 150 and that's book five and it uh and it mirrors the book of deuteronomy
23:30in the law and the reason that's important is that uh today we're in the psalms 119
23:37and uh a little bit of research real reveals that uh these psalms are called that are known as the
23:47torah psalm and and and there are three of them uh psalms 1 psalms 19 and psalms 119
23:58are called the torah psalms and they exist solely to praise the statutes commandments
24:07testimonies and judgments found in the pentateuch psalms 119 is the longest chapter we know that now
24:15we've talked about that a number of times and it dedicates 176 verses meditating entirely on the beauty
24:25of the available law that they had at that time and uh that is the whole that is the whole background of
24:36this huge book of psalms that we have it has it's divided into four sections it's been that way
24:46and uh and this particular one has a real special uh meaning to it and that it talks completely about
24:58the word of god you hear the word of god being mentioned over and over and over again in different
25:04ways the law the word and and uh so that is the place in the in that we're at right now uh sit down
25:17and uh look around and see what we have in front of us this is a massive piece of real estate that we're
25:25in the kd7 pbt back to you next all right mark thanks for those comments um yeah we are in the
25:36deuteronomy section of the book of psalms mark was saying and uh there's three psalms he pointed out
25:42that are involved with praising the scriptures and that would be psalm 1 psalm 19 and psalm 119
25:50that is what we're in right now and so it's just an opportunity for us to sit here uh look around uh
25:56focus on the word of god and rejoice in the fact that we have the inspired scriptures and that they
26:02are there to guide our feet in the path uh that leads us to um heaven and to christ uh and to uh uh
26:12uh our our destiny in the future so mark thank you for that comment and appreciate uh you pointing
26:19out the connection between psalm 1 psalm 19 and psalm 119 they're all uh passages that deal with the
26:28praise of the word of god all right uh any other comments please come down to call sign follow up
26:34follow please go ahead yeah kb7 and i just want to follow up on my initial uh comment and it ties
26:44right into uh one of the points primary points that mark was making there and that is if you look at
26:51verse 65 it says he has done well to us servants but according unto that word and this is the filter this
27:01is the thing and the word is the focus of course god has always dealt well good with us but according
27:08to that word and even though he's dealing with adversary you know god is always faithful to his
27:14word he didn't promise them you know life was going to be easy and uh you know uh you know that that uh
27:24but he did uh promise that he would be with his people he did promise he would provide for them
27:31he did promise them he would discipline as his sons and he did promise that he would bring them home
27:38and he is has been faithful to his promise there and he was also faithful to his word to us as well
27:46and of course you know the the word lord here of course is again the covenant yahweh uh expression of god
27:55uh the the identifying of course uh the pre-incarnate lord our savior jesus here uh but faithful unto his
28:03word so you know to mark's point uh as you read through these texts uh god is uh has always dealt
28:12good with us unto us but he's also done that through the through the uh faithfulness of his word kb sevens
28:22that accept
28:26yeah you know it's always really important to tie who god is and what god is doing to the scriptures
28:34to the word of god and what they have to say about that you know a lot of people uh can't speculate
28:39about what god is thinking what god is doing what god is like um and that always leads us astray our
28:46minds are not a safe guide and our hearts are not a safe guide to tell us who god is like and what
28:52he's doing and why he's doing it we have to go to the scriptures as you say and so verse 65 thou
28:59hast dealt well with thy servant oh lord according to thy word and so uh as we look at the word of god
29:06it tells us about the well-doing of god and so that's how we interpret our providential circumstances
29:14what does the scripture say god is doing not what do my feelings tell me that god is doing
29:20kevin thanks for that all right other comments please come down
29:32all right there's a couple of verses here i'd like to comment on uh when you look at verse 67
29:42he says before i was afflicted i went astray but now i have kept thy statute in verse 71 it is good for
29:53me that i have been afflicted that i might learn thy statute and so here's a situation where the
30:00the psalmist has gone through some tough times and uh what he's doing is he's saying thank god for
30:06the tough times because as a result of them uh i i got back in the path where i belong and i know that
30:14many of us have experienced times in our life where we've gone off the rails and we've gone out into the
30:20world and we've gone into sin and god brings some negative providence into our life and we go oh wait a
30:27second here i i've been i've been uh disobeying god here i need to get squared away i need to get
30:34right with god and so the affliction was a nudge from god that's saying hey you know you're out here
30:39in the weeds uh you need to get back in the narrow way that leads to life you need to live for god walk
30:45with god and repent of your sins and so he says in verse 71 that it's good for my me that i've been
30:52afflicted that i might learn your statute so afflictions not only get us back onto the path
30:59afflictions then are a tool god uses to deepen our understanding of the word of god and you know
31:05oftentimes when we're hurting we turn to the scriptures and they have a power and they have
31:11an application to us uh that is that we've never seen before and so uh you know when it opens with this
31:19phrase that was dealt well with thy service that includes the affliction because the affliction
31:25turn us back into the path that we've strayed away from and the afflictions also give us a deeper
31:32understanding of god and his law all right any other comments please come down to your call sign
31:37n7 gnd uh mike n7 gnd please go ahead uh this is uh n7 gnd thanks max uh i'm always interested in
31:58the historical context of what scripture is talking about in this particular um in uh verse 83 though
32:08i'm like a wineskin in the smoke i do not forget your decrees so i dug a little deeper in that and
32:15yes the two different ways to look at this is wineskin older wineskin um they were used in
32:22tents and places like that where they didn't have a chimney to help control the smoke and the
32:26wineskin may become dark and brittle and hardened the only thing useful for that the other idea
32:34is a little deeper is that they actually treated the wineskin with smoke and mist and that would
32:42help preserve it out of smoky flavors so it made the wine that was stored in it very interesting unusual
32:48um but that was for older wineskins uh that have been around they were seasoned so i guess
32:56two ways to look at this one is either i'm dark i'm fertile i'm kind of worn out but i won't forget
33:02your decrees the other way to look at this is although i'm seasoned and i'm experienced and i've been used
33:09useful i still don't forget your decrees you know i have i'm still focused on on god and what he is
33:17doing even though i think that i've seen it all done it all no i'm going to still not forget your
33:24decrees and obey god in 7g and d back then yeah mike that's very interesting thank you for that insight um
33:34yeah you know you run across a verse like um uh verse uh 83 i'm become like a bottle in the smoke
33:41and you wonder what in the world is that talking about well mike has just given us some illumination
33:46there uh so thank you for that yeah smoke um uh you know i mike i remember being around campfires and
33:55getting smoke in my eyes and how did that burn and so uh you know i i tend to think of that as as being
34:03uh a situation where um uh even though i'm being irritated and even though i'm being annoyed
34:10uh i still stay focused on god's word and then the other thing you brought out there is that um yeah
34:18sometimes this is used for uh preserving and maturing wine skins uh so that they last longer and uh
34:26actually impart a smoky flavor to the to the wine so the idea of maturity there uh we use smoke to
34:33cure meat um those kinds of things so mike thanks for looking into that thanks for making those
34:39connections and uh that's something that's certainly worth looking into deeper uh and i appreciate you
34:46uh doing that for us all right wb7mx looking for further comments on psalm 119 verses 165 to 96
34:55please come down with your call time
35:14all right while you're thinking let's focus for a minute on uh on verse uh 72 verse 72 says the law of thy
35:24mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver and you know a lot of people paste value on
35:32money you know and they want to get rich or they want to win the lottery or they think if they were
35:38a multi-millionaire somehow uh everything would be right and everything would be fixed and yet you know
35:45money has very limited utility basically it can provide things for our bodies and that's about it
35:52it but uh when it says here the law of thy mouth is better than thousands of gold and silver it's
35:58talking about the exceeding value of the word of god and because uh from the word of god we can find
36:05eternal life from the word of god we can find wisdom so that we make good uh choices and have good
36:12outcomes and from the word of god we learn about god and through it we have a relationship with god and
36:19most of all the word of god teaches us about jesus christ our lord and savior the redemption he's
36:25provided the forgiveness that he supplies and the reconciliation that he achieved for us and those
36:33are the true unsearchable riches of christ and you know it amazes me how much time people spend
36:40pursuing thousands of silver and gold and how little time they spend reading the bible and gaining those
36:48everlasting riches uh that are in the scriptures because you know all the money we have is going to
36:55pass away for sure at the end of our lives we're going to lose access to it but our souls last forever
37:02and so the bible says what does it profit with a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul
37:08and so even though you have all the wealth of all the world if you uh wind up dying and going to hell
37:14um you know you haven't gained anything the story of the rich man of lazarus perfect example luke chapter
37:2116 you know we have the rich man who was dressed in purple and fared sumptuously every day and was on
37:28the top of the world economically and then you've got lazarus uh you know laid at his gate full of sores
37:33dogs licked his wounds and yet after they died their positions were reversed and the rich man's in hell he
37:39doesn't have a drop of water for his tongue lazarus is in heaven with abraham full of blessing and
37:47eternal life and so i think it's really important for us to stop and assess you know am i paying enough
37:55attention am i giving enough time to reading the scriptures learning the scriptures and living out
38:03the scriptures or am i consumed with the pursuit of material wealth now we've all got to have jobs
38:09you know we've all got to work and earn money have money and savings i've done all that i have all
38:14that but that can't be the number one priority in our life and so we need to carve out time like we're
38:21doing right now uh for the word of god because uh this is where the true wealth is uh this is where
38:28the true value is and we need to keep that priority in place all right wb7nx here that control for the
38:36west coast bible study any more comments on our passage please come down at your call
38:42is that excellent
38:46all right we had a double there first of all well km5f you go first
38:51yeah i've often been confused about the uh how gold became so important it's mostly psychological
38:58the only value of gold in the bible uh other you know as far as utilitarian use is pavement in heaven
39:08other than that it's all psychological value pamphlet
39:14yeah you know gold is is a medium of exchange um you know it's rare and it's uh non-reproducible
39:24and it's divisible and it's portable to a reasonable degree and that's why it's used as money um but
39:33you're right in in the grand scheme of things i mean it's kind of pretty right um you know most of us
39:39have a ring or something made out of gold because it's it has a delightful color but you know you're
39:45right will we put way too much value on on that and as you said that the streets are going to be paved
39:51with gold in heaven so it has ultimately about the value of asphalt uh it adorns uh it adorns uh
40:00adorns heaven and uh so anyway some think uh will that the gold streets uh in revelation there uh 21
40:09are representative of jesus christ because he's the street uh it says in john uh 14 6 he is the way
40:18the truth and the life and the word there for way is the word haras and it means road
40:23and so jesus is the road he's the he's the street to heaven and he's that golden street uh that gets us
40:30into heaven if we just follow uh that road we follow him who is the road uh into heaven so well great
40:38comment there about the comparative value of physical gold versus the unsearchable riches of christ all
40:46right uh there was another station in there along with will i think it might have been kevin uh if
40:51that's you kevin go ahead yeah thank you max and very good comment too will gave you seven zx and
40:59yeah my comment to this too is is consider the the test of the law of thy mouth is better
41:06than thousands of gold and silver and you know and and of course the the uh the focus here is is you
41:14know great treasure great value great temporal value um so many mankind in our our uh i guess uh our
41:26carnal desires is is great wealth sometimes and boy you know we we can see that just totally
41:34consume a person uh and we can also see it even in people uh wanting to walk through sometimes distort
41:43and of course we see the heretical applications of it with many on tv and and things too uh of the
41:52focus on that but what is more valuable and this is really a very personal expression here uh the word of
42:00god what comes out of his mouth you know and we open our bible we are seeing the words of god and you
42:08you know how much would you be willing to uh receive to give up your bible for a year you know
42:15would a thousand dollars persuade you to give up your bible for a year or maybe ten thousand or maybe
42:21a big lottery winning lottery ticket would that be enough to to to get you to trade your uh your
42:29bible in for for that for that winning lottery ticket well you know the point here is the greatest
42:35thing we have the most one of the most valuable things and i and i i try to always reflect and
42:41appreciate the fact that we have the word of god so readily available to us it's uh it's hard for me
42:49to imagine not having it but like i started out in this time they did not have the word of god just you
42:56know in every household uh they had to oftentimes wait till it was read and uh you know make notes and and
43:05and and and write songs and make songs like this um and of course this one by the inspiration of god
43:11is those that we are reading but how valuable is the word of god to us and as we as believers know
43:20as we have uh hung on to god's communication to us of course we have a prayer to him but uh what what
43:29what a blessing it is truly you know more valuable than all the temporal wealth that we can uh uh
43:37accumulate or imagine give you servants that accept
43:45yeah amen kevin the value there is uh is immense and you know when you put it in those terms would you
43:50give up your bible for ten thousand dollars uh no um you could offer me any amount of money and i would
43:57not give up my bible because it is more valuable than all the money in the world all right good
44:04comments we're closing in on the end of our bible study are there any further comments please come in
44:17all right well i just want to make a final comment here on uh verse 92 verse 92 says unless thy law had
44:26been my delight i should have perished in my affliction and you know we all have affliction and we need
44:33perspective in those affliction and what the scriptures do is they give us comfort they give us perspective
44:41and they help us to uh understand that god uh brings afflictions for our good uh to bring us back on the
44:50path uh to teach us this statute and then it says in verse 75 uh oh i know oh lord thy judgments are right
45:00and that thou hast in faithfulness afflicted me so you know it's just like a faithful parent will discipline
45:06a child uh so that they will not just be a wild uh uncontrolled uh destructive brat uh in the same way god
45:16disciplines us in faithfulness and uh what what happens is these afflictions come into our lives
45:24we go to the scriptures we read the scriptures and uh and instead of going into depression and despair and
45:32despondency uh and god forbid suicide we're filled with hope because we know that a good god is managing
45:41the affairs in our life he's doing it to do us good he's doing us to to discipline us to mature us
45:49to equip us for ministry and to turn our hearts back to him so uh unless thy law had been my delight
45:56i should have perished in my affliction verse 93 i will never forget thy precepts for with them thou
46:03have enlivened me um and so when you read the scriptures uh they give you a fresh infusion of
46:12encouragement and of hope uh and of of strength to be able to take that next step uh in the face of the
46:22adversity that we're in so have that uh the scriptures next to you uh be reading them uh treasure them
46:29value them uh understand god based on what they say about him understand your circumstances based
46:37on what the scriptures say about your circumstances and god's dealings and as you use the word of god
46:44as the framework within which to interpret god and your circumstances you will find a great deal of
46:51peace and hope instead of despondency and despair all right we are out of time it is time for us to go to
46:58prayer are there any final prayer requests before uh jerry leads us in prayer please come down to call
47:06please please comment
47:10uh sure go ahead briefly yeah i just wanted to reflect here you know the cost that it's taken to get our
47:18bible in english and and tyndale you know we're celebrating i think i mentioned it before 500 years
47:24now of uh having the word of god in english and of course it cost tendale his life and of course much
47:31of uh 90 probably of the king james bible came out of tendale's work there so anyway uh just to emphasize
47:40the value point and the devotion of those before us to keep god's word available to us can be sevens that
47:46yeah amen people paid a huge price they laid down their lives to get the scriptures to us
47:55and uh we need to value them based on that thank you for that kevin all right um i just got an update
48:01from cody ki7 trf about his uh uncle doug we've been praying for doug uh he uh had a severe injury to his head
48:11uh he lost one of his eyes um and he had a brain infection and he's been in the hospital we've been
48:18praying for him uh cody says update and praise report on my uncle doug he's responding well to
48:25the new treatment and they are considering moving him back to the rehab facility previously they had
48:32said he'd need to be in the hospital for up to a year while on the new treatment he's starting to use
48:38his voice again he still has a ways to go but it's moving in the right direction praise the lord so
48:44that's cody ti7 trf uh the praise uh the prayer request for his uncle doug uh we just need to add
48:52some uh praise to that that he is improving and that he's headed in the right direction and uh that
