The Bible reading

Psalm 121

The West Coast Bible Study group gathered to examine Psalm 121, a short psalm of degrees traditionally sung by pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem for feasts. The study focused on the theme of God as the ultimate helper, emphasizing that human beings are not self-sufficient and require divine assistance to cope with life's overwhelming challenges. The psalmist looks to the hills of Jerusalem, specifically Mount Zion and the Temple, as the source of help, rather than the false idols often placed on high places.

Participants discussed the translation of the first verse, noting it can be read as either a statement or a rhetorical question rejecting reliance on pagan high places. The study highlighted the contrast between the sleeping gods of the nations and the ever-watchful God of Israel, who neither slumbers nor sleeps. This divine vigilance is described as a constant protection, ensuring that the believer's foot is not moved and that they are preserved from evil both by day and by night.

The group explored the spiritual application of these physical metaphors, connecting the preservation of the foot to standing firm in faith and grace. They also noted the assurance of eternal security, where God preserves the soul of His saints, a theme reinforced by references to John 10 and the idea that no one can pluck believers out of the Father's hand. The study concluded with a reflection on the comfort found in knowing that the Creator of the heavens and earth is actively managing and protecting the lives of His people.

Insights

  • The psalmist's reference to the hills serves as a metonymy for the Temple and God, distinguishing the true God from the idols placed on pagan high places.
  • The military analogy of a sentry who must not sleep on guard duty illustrates the seriousness of God's constant vigilance over His people.
  • The contrast between Elijah's taunt of Baal being 'asleep' and the biblical truth that God never slumbers provides a powerful assurance of divine attention.
  • The 'shade at your right hand' is likened to a rock providing protection from the sun, symbolizing God standing between believers and the assaults of Satan.
  • The study connected the physical journey of the pilgrims to the spiritual journey of Jesus, who would have sung these psalms during His own ascents to Jerusalem.
  • The preservation of the soul is the ultimate goal of God's keeping, as the body is temporary but the soul's security is eternal.
  • The group noted that while the battle may be larger than the individual, it is not larger than God, providing a certain hope in an uncertain future.

7:17turn to your work as well we ask that you would send your voice here to each and everyone here those that
7:24checked in and those that didn't everyone that we would each receive those things you have for us today in your
7:32following our word and we ask that you all follow us and actually lead us through our days ordering our steps
7:40that we might be those things that you want us to be for the world alike and we lift all this up to you in Jesus' name Amen
7:52amen all right thank you so much Jerry for that prayer really appreciate that a lot okay we are in
8:00psalm 121 uh and this psalm is a short psalm once again about eight verses we're going to be in a section
8:08of pretty short psalms here for a while um and this psalm speaks to us about the fact that God is our helper
8:15helper and we need a helper in this life don't we because there's lots of situations that we face
8:21for which we do not have either the strength or the ability or the resources to cope um because our
8:29problems are bigger than we are and our enemies are more powerful than we are and our needs are larger
8:36than the resources we have to meet them and so a lot of times in life we feel overwhelmed and under
8:42equipped to deal with the challenges that we face and so it's for this reason that we need to look
8:49outside of ourselves for help and strength and resources to meet the needs that we are too inadequate
8:57to meet now the good news of our psalm today is that when we look outside of ourselves for someone to
9:04help us there is actually someone there to be able to render that help and not only is there someone
9:11there who can help us the person who is there is willing and able to help us with all the resources
9:18that we need and of course that person who is there to help is god uh you know it's important for us to
9:25understand that god never intended for us to be self-sufficient uh we're we're not independent folks
9:33uh with the ability to meet our own needs all by ourselves without anyone's help so we were created
9:42to need god's help to function even as sinless creatures but now that we are fallen creatures we
9:49need god's help now more than ever and the good news is of our psalm is that god is glad to help
9:55god uh encourages us to seek him for help and he's always comes to the help of his people
10:03in just the way they need even though it's usually not in the way in which they expect
10:09he knows what we need before we do and when finally we become aware of our need he's already made provision
10:17to supply what we ask for before we even know to ask for it and so to have such a helper is amazing
10:24blessing in this life and to try to get through this life without such a helper is to lead the
10:30most miserable existence and to have the most hopeless kind of existence so psalm 121 is a psalm of trust
10:39it counsels us to trust in the lord for his help in every situation in life he guards us he guides us he
10:48provides for us he defends us 100 of the time and 100 of the situations that we are in without him
10:56we're hopeless but with him we're more than conquerors and so this psalm rejoices in the safety we have under
11:04the watchful eye of our god who made us and who preserves us and upholds us so we can rejoice in the
11:11same god that protected the psalmist and know that that same god protects us and so therefore we can
11:18boldly come to the throne of grace to obtain help and mercy in our time of need all right well let's
11:24look together then at psalm 121 and beck alfalfa five yankee is going to read for us today beck read
11:31for us please psalm 121 go ahead good morning everybody i'm reading from the new king james version
11:38and starting with uh chapter 121 i will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help
11:47i'm picking you up my help comes from the lord who made heaven and earth he will not allow your foot
11:52to be moved he who keeps you will not slumber behold he who keeps israel shall neither slumber or sleep
12:00the lord is your keeper the lord is your shade at your right hand the sun shall not strike you by day
12:07nor the moon by night the lord shall preserve you from all evil he shall preserve you through your
12:14soul the lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth and even forever
12:21more amen all right thank you for that reading back yeah i had to pick you up on the utah str i was
12:27hearing nothing on my radio and i thought hey is back reading and uh so anyway that's the reason for my
12:33comment all right all right deck thank you for reading psalm 121 all right any comments on psalm 121
12:40please come down to your call line
12:45roger wb7vzl please go ahead well for some reason the way my mind is working this morning
13:05i can't help but think of elijah's elijah's uh tongue of cheek tongue and sheep
13:17well i didn't get my fast this morning i can tell but this phrase in verse three he who keeps you
13:27will not slumber and i can't help but think of elijah when he commented or or commented about
13:40all the priests of baal not getting any results over their sacrifice there was no response from their
13:46god and he taunts them that's the word he taunts them as to whether his god is off to their god is off to
13:56the far country or he's slumbering or he's not hearing so what a contrast i i i should look that
14:04one up but it's a it it just jumped out at me wb7vzl
14:11yeah well said well when yeah elijah uh uh challenged the porter he prophesed to baal on mount carmel
14:22and uh they were crying out for baal to send down fire on their sacrifice
14:27and of course there was no response and so you're right elijah taunts them and says uh
14:33what's the matter is baal asleep and uh you know the good news is our god is never asleep he's on watch
14:3924 7 365 uh for a lifetime and so um you know the good news is is that we're never abandoned we're
14:50never neglected we're never overlooked god is always there with all of his attention on each of us all of
15:00the time and that's really really good news and so um you know it says in the latter part of verse
15:07three he that keepeth thee will not slumber and then verse four behold he that keepeth israel
15:13shall neither slumber nor sleep um you know roger in the military if you're a a sentry uh and you
15:21fall asleep on on guard duty uh as i understand it they will put you to death um and so that is
15:30something that uh they take uh very very uh seriously uh because if the guard goes to sleep
15:37the enemy can sneak into the camp and kill everybody else who is sleeping and is uh supposed to be
15:42sleeping and so um you know it's wonderful to know that god is always alert god is always aware
15:50he's fully up to speed uh you know in verse 3b it says uh he that keepeth thee will not slumber and then
16:00in verse four he that keeps israel and so the point is is god is as uh aware and awake regarding each of
16:08us individually and all of us corporately together and so we'll not be negligent in watching out for us
16:15us and in watching out over us roger great comment all right any other comments please come out
16:22w7rkd burr w7rkd go ahead yeah it just reminds me of uh of uh the scripture in the new testament
16:33uh that no one can pluck us pluck us out of this out of his hand w7rkd yeah appreciate that burr that's in
16:44the gospel of john chapter 10 and uh jesus is uh making the point there that his sheep are safe
16:52and so uh yeah john chapter 10 uh he says in verse 27 my sheep hear my voice i know them and they
17:00follow me and i give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish neither shall any man pluck
17:07them out of my hand my father which gave them to me is greater than all and no man is able
17:14to pluck them out of my father's hand and so yes when we're cared for by the father's hand
17:22no one can come and sneak us out from under his care and out of the hand of his protection and out of
17:29the hand of his provision a bird thank you for pointing out john chapter 10 uh verses 27 through 29
17:39great passage in a good parallel with what we're talking about all right any other comments please come
17:44out
17:45mark
17:52mark's in there and i after him okay good thank you for that kevin all right mark kj7 pvt please go ahead
18:00uh yeah just a little comment here max um i'm seeing that uh this uh 121 um it does the way that we
18:16read it in in the king james apparently it was phrased as a question and it doesn't appear that way in the king
18:24james and um so here's an alternate way of looking at those two verses together instead of saying i will
18:35lift up mine eyes to the hills from whence come my help it was phrased as a question so it could be said
18:46uh uh shall i lift my mind to the hills
18:51and what's important here uh of doing this is that uh the the writer
19:03but he is answering my help coming from the lord
19:09we're not looking for our help we are looking
19:13to who made heaven and the earth and they
19:23yeah mark good comment thank you for pointing that out so what mark was saying is verse one
19:28uh could be translated either as a question or as a statement so if it's translated as a question
19:36it's will i lift up my eyes under the hills from whence comes my health question mark and you know if
19:43it's translated that way uh we know that a lot of the high places were places of idolatry okay and so
19:52people would look up to the hills to their idols uh that were on the tops of the hills and so the
19:58psalmist could be saying in verse one am i going to look to the high places for my help verse two no
20:06my help comes from jehovah god the lord which made heaven and earth so it could be translated that way
20:13and mark is correct uh it could also be translated the way it is in the king james i i as a statement i
20:21will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help uh my help comes from the lord who made
20:29heaven and earth now this is a psalm of degrees and a lot of these are these are all the songs that
20:35israel sang when she went up to the feast uh in jerusalem three times a year and so it's thought that
20:44this psalm was written for pilgrims who were traveling to jerusalem to celebrate those various feasts
20:51and as they traveled closer to jerusalem eventually the hills of jerusalem came into view and the view
20:58of the hills on which jerusalem sat and especially mount zion in which the temple sat evoked this phrase
21:06in verse one and so the psalmist says i will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help
21:14now obviously the hills can't help much they're inanimate mounds of dirt and rock but the hills
21:21were used here by way of metonymy that is the substitution of one thing for another and the
21:27hills here are the hills of jerusalem and the most prominent among them is zion on which the temple sat
21:35and so uh it's thought here that what's going on is that uh the help he needed was going to come from
21:43the hill of zion uh from the temple which sat on that hill and in particular from the lord who occupied
21:50that temple that sat on that hill and so it could be understood that way as well either way brings a good
21:58clear sense uh we're not going to trust in the false gods that dwell on the high places we are going to
22:05trust in the true god that dwells on the hill of zion where the temple sits and he's there in the holy of
22:12holies and so uh he kind of clarifies that thought mark in verse two uh that's it's the lord who is in the
22:20temple that sits on the hill that he has in mind so he says in verse two my help is from the lord so
22:28as he looks at the hills of jerusalem he knows his help will come from those hills from the
22:33temple that sits on them and in particular from the god who dwells in that temple and if you look
22:38back at psalm 20 um and in verses one and two i'll just read that for you um it says there in psalm 20
22:48verses um one and two it says the king shall joy in thy strength oh lord and in the salvation how greatly
22:56he rejoices thou has given him his heart's desire and is not withholding the request of his lips no
23:03i'm in the wrong psalm i'm in 21 okay psalm 20 psalm 20 verses one and two the lord hear thee in the day
23:11of trouble the name of the god of jacob defend thee send the help from the sanctuary and strengthen the
23:17out of zion so i think uh mark that's the reason why the king james translators chose to translate this
23:24as a statement instead of as a question uh others translated as a question it can go either way
23:32uh so either way brings good sense uh mark kj7 pvt back to you
23:43um thank you max yeah i wasn't um i wasn't putting forward the idea that this is what it should be but
23:51uh i just uh i just uh uh that background uh coming from some of the original
23:57apparently at least what i'm seeing and um but the thing that rings true for sure is that our help
24:06comes from the lord who made heaven and earth and i'm just going to inject my own my own
24:12my own who made heaven and the earth and the hills that we're talking about
24:21that's the only reason to my um my point here thank you for uh your uh expounding on that and uh
24:30the world just keeps you
24:31yeah mark real good and you're exactly right um you know when it says my help comes from the lord
24:42they have a qualifying statement there that you pointed out which made the heavens and the earth
24:48well the same god who made the heavens and the earth is the god who is helping us and what's amazing
24:57is that uh when you look at the power and the wisdom and the ability that it took to create the
25:03heavens and the earth uh do you then think that he has the power and the wisdom and the ability to
25:08help us with our problems absolutely he does i mean solving your problems is child's play compared
25:15with the difficulty of the problem of how to create the heavens and the earth and furthermore if god
25:22made the heavens and the earth he also controls them and manages them and all things that occur in
25:27them and so as ephesians 1 11 says he works all things together after the counsel of his own will
25:34so um you know it's a wonderful thing that we have this powerful wise god who not only made everything
25:41but controls everything and this is the god who is managing our problems and controlling them
25:47so like when your house floods well the one who made the heavens and the earth not only brought
25:53that to pass but also brings the remedy as well so we're going to trust in him and look to him for
25:59our help and know that he has the power and the resources and the ability to bring help in his way and
26:06in his time which usually is not our way in our time all right wb7mx back to the group any other comments
26:15please come down kb7zxn kb7zxn kevin i'm sorry i forgot about you brother carry on hey no worries
26:23there's a great conversation and a lot of great things shared so um you know if i abruptly stop
26:29i mean i'm trying i know i was trying to sneeze here but uh anyway well and i'm glad you you brought up
26:37the point that uh you know these psalms from 20 through 34 these 15 psalms here are psalms that were
26:45traditionally sung on the ascent to jerusalem you know god did call them uh the pilgrims and those
26:54out in the lower lands you know three times a year up to jerusalem and uh you know it's a 3 000 or
27:03three thousand foot ascent from jericho up to uh jerusalem there and uh deuteronomy 15 15 i believe
27:13it is is where the those three feasts in the spring you know you have the uh uh passover and then 50 days
27:21later we have they have uh well what we now know as pentecost and then the fall the feast of booths and
27:28along that ascent these psalms were sung and what wonderful encouragements and insurances that they
27:37are and and i think you know i really love your your thought uh roger of of of the contrast between god
27:48never sleeps and and and elijah challenging the the priests of the the false god uh where's your god he must
27:58be uh preoccupied maybe sleeping but it's true our god never rests and this is one of the most
28:06important principles we have in this is that our being kept being looked out for we we we can only do
28:15so much it doesn't depend on us god's people he keeps he looks out for and uh you know jesus expresses
28:24that in in john 17 those that you've given me i shall keep it and lose none and he he gives us security
28:33in him and the you know the picture that he gives you know he's made the heavens and the earth he's all
28:40powerful and sometimes we forget that because we can feel pretty insecure out there in this world
28:45if we're away from home a long ways we're in foreign uh circumstances in foreign areas uh we're
28:54we're vulnerable in certain situations um uh we're in circumstances that you know we're just a little
29:02sketchy but yet we know the one that uh keeps us is god above the one that's made that covenant
29:11relationship with them is the same jehovah god that's made that covenant relationship with us
29:17and is will keep us uh to fulfillment to glory kb7 is that example
29:27yeah kevin really well said um and uh you know we're going to be coming to a psalm here
29:32psalm 139 in just a little bit which talks about that omnipresence of god that you were talking about
29:40and uh he says no matter where he is no matter where he's going uh god's hand is with him god's
29:46presence is with him and uh so it's wonderful to know that uh no matter where we go uh our god is
29:54with us he's watching over us and protecting us thanks for pointing that out what a wonderful uh
30:00concept there kevin all right any other comments on our psalm please oh just a second here uh benette
30:07would like to acknowledge philip k6 hsv good morning phil see you there showed up on the utah sdr
30:13good to have you with us brother was missing you this morning and there you are all right any other
30:19any other uh check-ins uh right now go ahead whiskey whiskey seven tango
30:28okay i heard whiskey whiskey seven and i think it's tango is that you tom can you give me a roger
30:33roger roger roger okay we got tom all right ww7t uh tom you're barely readable the band is really
30:42poor this morning but we got you thank you for being there brother all right any other check-ins
30:47come now
30:52all right back to the net okay psalm 121 any uh any further comments on psalm 121 please come now
30:59in 7g m5f okay we had a double there i did pick out will km5f will km5f please go ahead yeah in
31:10reference to verse 30 where it says uh he will not allow your foot to be removed we should stand in
31:19faith in uh first or second corinthians 124 it says not that the that we lord it over your faith but we
31:27are workers with you in your joy for in your faith you are standing firm okay i'm sorry this
31:35yeah copy that so uh will was bringing out the spiritual application of verse 3 psalm 121 verse 3
31:43it says he will not suffer thy foot to be moved and will was talking about the fact that in the new
31:49testament it talks about standing firm in our spiritual walk in our spiritual life and in our
31:55spiritual commitment and will you're exactly right um not only does god protect us from slipping and
32:01falling physically uh many times uh i could have should have would have fallen and uh but for the grace
32:10of god uh i was preserved but uh there's all sorts of uh of ways satan is trying to knock us down
32:18spiritually uh and uh god preserves us in our walk with him uh and keeps us from stumbling keeps us
32:27from falling away and keeps us in that narrow way that leads to life so yeah god will protect us from
32:35stumbling physically and he will protect us from stumbling spiritually will thank you for bringing out
32:41that spiritual application all right there was another station in there with will other station come now
32:53i don't hear them but five yankees comment all right five yankee go ahead yeah what you're just
33:01talking about uh god always protecting us faithfully you know mentally and uh physically that's in verse
33:12eight the lord shall preserve you're going out and you're coming in from this time forth and forevermore
33:23yeah great comment reinforcing what it says there in verse three so thank you for that beck
33:29verse three he will not suffer thy foot to be moved verse eight the lord shall preserve thy going
33:34out and the coming in from this time forth even forevermore and so the whole idea there is that uh
33:42in the morning you know a man goes out of his house to do his work in the field uh in the evening he
33:48comes back into his house and this phrase going out and coming in refers to all that a man does
33:56in his daily work and in his commerce and so what's being said there in verse eight is that god will
34:02preserve us as we go out to work while we work as we come home from work uh and how long is he going
34:08to do so from this time forward even forever more so day and night at work and at home now and forever
34:16god is not going to let our foot slip uh he's going to be a hundred percent vigilant 100 of the time
34:21and never sleep or slumber so this is the god that takes care of us and this is the god from whom our
34:27help comes so uh from the morning till the night all throughout the day the god cares for his people
34:35uh great comment there beck thank you for connecting verse three and verse eight
34:40all right any other comments please come now okay we had a triple there i think first of all will
34:51km5f will go ahead yeah you had mentioned standing in grace well in romans 5 2 it says
34:58through whom also we have obtained our instruction by faith into this grace in which we stand and we
35:05exult in hope of the glory of god so it mentions faith and grace both standing in both cam 5s
35:14yeah amen well thank you for that uh romans 5 2 uh we stand in grace and in faith so once again the
35:23idea of standing spiritually is brought out in romans 5 and verse 2 i think the second caller we had was uh
35:30kevin kb7 zedickson go ahead kevin kb7 zedickson well you're doing quite well in starting things out
35:37and i think mark and i double pretty much together as well so um well i'm just you know reflecting too
35:45and consider you know when jesus was you know every year they they come up for these feasts but we read in
35:52in the bible that uh jesus uh when he was 12 his family came up to jerusalem for passover and he was
36:01like a part of this procession at least at that time maybe additional time other times as well
36:08but uh consider he was probably singing this song and the other 15 songs that we're going through right
36:14now uh as the procession goes on and uh i can only imagine even at 12 what a wonder it would have been
36:24to be able to uh make that journey with our lord uh even as a youth and they have him share insights
36:33for us as we know uh when they returned home he stayed back in the temple and they had to come back
36:40looking for him and he was astounding the scholars and the rabbis and the temple by his teaching at the
36:47age 12. i can imagine the insights we might have gotten uh on that journey up the hill uh and the
36:54ascent there to jerusalem kb7 zedickson yeah kevin you know it's wonderful to think about jesus uh singing
37:05these psalms uh we know that at the end of the lord's supper that when they went out to them that
37:11they went when they had sung a hymn they went out to the mount of olives and so mark was pointing out
37:16in a previous bible study together uh how that uh these psalms that we were in previously were psalms that
37:23were sung during the passover and so uh the lord jesus was well acquainted with the book of psalms
37:29sang them constantly and they expressed his heart uh to his father and this would have been one of
37:36those psalms as well so uh what what an amazing thing it is to think that the man christ jesus you
37:44know he's god and man but in his humanity uh he's saying i'm going to lift up my eyes uh to the temple
37:52and to the god who dwells in that temple and he's going to help me as i go uh to jerusalem the triumphal
38:00entry the conflict uh the last supper and then of course gethsemane and the crucifixion and all of
38:08that uh he was saying my help is going to come from the lord and uh the lord's going to keep me and
38:15he's not going to slumber or sleep all right kj7 pvt you had a comment please go ahead
38:22and the answer is given here he shall preserve your soul
38:50and uh we see jesus using this um in mark
38:5837 in mass 16 26 where uh he poses this question to his disciples
39:07um what will a man give in exchange for his soul well the answer is uh you can't do that
39:14uh so uh we are entirely dependent on on our lord the one who paid the price for
39:23uh
39:32and uh as we go through life we can look back at how the lord has kept us how he's held us in his hand
39:41and when we breathe our last breath uh he still has uh in in his confidence and in his power he will keep us
39:53uh we're promised to be with him forever and ever uh so that's uh that's uh that's an amazing
40:02fundamental here that is working in our favor
40:06and he keeps us back to you
40:17yeah mark great comment thank you for that uh verse seven the lord shall preserve thee from all evil and
40:23and then that phrase that really struck mark he shall preserve thy soul and so you know it's it's
40:31the preservation of our souls that really matters you know our bodies we know are going to wear out
40:37they're going to be used up our bodies can be killed uh but the lord uh is going to preserve our
40:43souls and of course he'll preserve our bodies too because in the resurrection we get them back right
40:48uh but the idea here is that the really important thing is our our heart relationship with god and
40:56uh you know the world and the flesh and the devil pull at us they want our souls and uh as as bird w7rkd
41:04brought out nope god says that one's mine i've got it in my hand and no one's going to take it out of my
41:11hand um and it reminds me uh mark of psalm 97 and verse 10 psalm 97 and verse 10 it says uh you that
41:22love the lord hate evil and now here it is he preserves the souls of his saints he delivers them
41:30out of the hand of the wicked so mark that just really reinforces what you brought out and that is
41:37the lord preserves his his saints uh in particular he preserves their souls their inner man uh the
41:43new nature that god has given to us and so yeah yeah you know sometimes a verse just jumps out there and
41:53just grabs your heart and the fact that he will preserve our souls uh that is such good news and that uh
42:01that is the source of our eternal security you know that we're securely held in his hand as burt brought
42:08out uh he preserves our soul mark as you brought out and uh you know as will brought out that he's not
42:15going to suffer our feet to be moved uh we're going to stand firm in grace and in faith and so the idea
42:23of preservation the idea of protection the idea of help against enemies that are bigger than we are
42:29all of those themes run through our psalm and reinforce uh our encouragement and our hope
42:35that even though the battle is bigger than we are it's not bigger than god is and so because of that
42:41we can go forward into uncertain future with a certain hope because we have a certain god who
42:48is going to be there and we can trust and rely on him all right great comments from the three of you
42:54thank you for that all right any other comments please come now
43:13all right while you're thinking i want to comment on uh verse five uh verse five says of god that the
43:21lord is thy keeper the lord is thy shade on thy right hand and the idea of a shade is that the sun
43:30of course was a constant threat to the people who lived in the middle east uh from heat stroke and from
43:36uh uh dying of thirst uh and all those things and the idea here is that of a rock i was down in palm
43:44springs just a couple of days ago and uh we went to joshua tree national park right and the sun is just
43:51blazing down but there's these giant rocks that stick up and we walked around the back side of one of
43:57those into the shadow and and i thought to myself about the verse that talks about that god is is is a
44:04mighty rock in a weary land and the idea is there you can get into the shadow of those rocks and be
44:10protected from the sun and so uh god stands between us and that which would assault us and protects us
44:18from it and just like a rock stands between you and the sun and uh gives you some shade and relief from
44:24the assault of the sun uh god is uh the rock that stands between us and those things that would assault
44:32us and this protection is equally good day or night verse six the sun shall not smite thee by day
44:39nor the moon by night so uh this is poetic speech here the point is whatever harm from satan or his
44:49people that would come on us when the sun was shining or whatever harm satan's people would work while the
44:56moon was shining god has the ability and the skill to see it coming and to stand between us and it and to
45:03defeat us and so whether uh satan intends harm against us during the daytime or whether he intends it
45:11during the night time god is this great rock that stands between us and him and his people and we dwell
45:20in the shade of his protection uh so that's uh something that is metaphorically stated there uh in verses uh
45:30five and six all right we are out of time it is time for us to go to prayer and but before we go to
45:36prayer are there any final prayer requests please come out with your call sign

57:39good job real good so uh the the award here goes to well km5f uh silence
57:45what is so fragile that uh saying it uh breaks it uh silence that's really good beck i appreciate that
57:52uh all right wb7mx here anybody want to chat throw out your call sign
58:00okay i expect wxp
58:04all right joe go ahead guess what i get to do this weekend
58:10guess what you get to do this weekend are you going to go to the races yeah ready i get the wrench
58:16on that funny car this weekend
58:18well that'll be fun yeah so do you take your tools with you or do they have tools down there over
58:26oh yeah he's all set up he's got everything we need except for alcohol he needs fuel so i'm
58:32bringing him some fuel while we go down there you know that guy he goes hey you have any fuel to
58:37sell i said sell you pay for everything don't worry about that we're bringing fuel that's about
58:42it copy that where do you get alcohol to run in those uh in those machines um do you where do you
58:50buy that stuff out there's a few places around here because racing is actually pretty good around here
58:57people a lot of people do it but uh ramos oil is where i used to get mine here around salato county
59:05but i am a guy a ham operator that works in the business with oil and what have you he brings it
59:11to me by the drum
59:16well that's really good yeah i used to buy oil by the 55 gallon drum from ramos uh when i was in
59:21sacramento for my business uh we used to do all of our machinery and it always changing the oil out so
59:27you just buy a 55 gallon drums and have a pump and it works out real well so yeah okay that makes
59:33sense so the refineries uh that make oil will at least produce it or at least the the retailers
59:40will carry it uh that's interesting now is that like 100 percent ethanol or what is that yeah that's
59:47what it is and uh yeah it's readily available okay i think you could darn near make that stuff out of garbage
59:57yeah well i think that's the same alcohol that's in uh uh whiskey is that correct
60:03no i don't think so i think it's different it could be i could be wrong i've never investigated
60:10it but i've been around enough people that made that stuff yeah but uh but you know what matt
60:16uh i think it could be max question well here's the deal is that um you know ethanol which is the same
60:25alcohol that is is in whiskey is what is in our gasoline um and um so i'm guessing it's the same
60:34alcohol that's uh in those alcohol uh double a fuel burners so um anyway um it's probably just a
60:43hundred percent pure ethanol they probably put something in it so people can't drink it you know
60:47um but um i i'm guessing that's what it is over km5s go ahead yeah it's more than likely that it's
60:58methanol methanol has one carbon our drinking alcohol has two carbons and uh isopropyl which is rubbing
61:06alcohol has three carbons wow well there's our chemist speaking uh thank you for that will uh
61:14which one of those would have the most combustion power one carbon two carbons or three one carbon
61:20came inside this yes that'd be methanol then so maybe that's methanol alcohol so uh oil thanks for
61:29that appreciate that insight uh so back over there to you joe go ahead five yankee
61:37five yankee go ahead yeah i'm wanting to know you said double a so that makes me feel like you're
61:43talking asphalt and i'm trying to figure out i've been listening to this a racing thing for about oh
61:49two three weeks now are we talking to asphalt or dirt uh we're talking asphalt joe uh uh go ahead
61:57there and explain to bert what you got and i mean to abec what you got and uh how that works go ahead
62:03there joe yeah we're drag racing on asphalt quarter mile with the christmas tree that comes down and
62:11whoever gets to the starting line first is the winner but in the class we're running is blown alcohol
62:19roger okay i was trying to figure out he kept talking about racing i'm a racing enthusiast but
62:25mine's an oval circle with dirt and a sprint car i have wrenched down my share of those yes sir yeah
62:32i love that too and the only thing different is they're confused they run around in circles looking
62:37for the finish line we know right where it is that's a good line i thought you might like that with the
62:46joke thing and everything but uh but no i get to go down there and play with those this weekend it's
62:51gonna be fun and it's getting a little cool for me i'm thinking it's not good all that horsepower with
62:57an engine running really well because it's cool to be on those tracks it's getting a little bit on the
63:03late side for me my car's tucked away in the garage i used to run around 30 to 40 laps for the final
63:12and uh i thought that was too short i can imagine what what is about 280 miles an hour 313 miles an
63:21hour and a quarter mile that's really short you know but everything goes in slow motion when you're in
63:29that car it seems like it takes forever you watch your hands go and you don't even know why they're
63:35moving where they are but you can see it all happening in slow motion that's all second nature
63:44yeah yeah you bet but that's what i'm going to do and carry on you guys i want to listen to see what
63:50everybody has to say and that that as long as that alcohol burns slow max that's what we're up to
63:56big compression engine you need a slower burning fuel sort of like the three different kinds of you
64:03know grades of fuel in the pump a hopped up engine in a corvette may require the 91 octane
64:11the higher the octane the slower it burns
64:16interesting i didn't realize that i didn't realize that um
64:20yeah i have a uh real average recognition that has a high compression and a premium in it and um
64:28i thought it needed to burn quicker because of the high compression but actually it needs to burn
64:31slower that's interesting thank you for that education joe uh really appreciate that all right that's
64:37joe ki6wxc in conversation with beck alz alpha 5 yankee will km5f and i am wb7max anybody else want to
64:45jump in here please come down with your call sign does that extend yeah
